Locking up or maybe we should call it hanging Snow this one seems to be what is certainly contributing to the problem

how long have you been using AVG,

in my honest opinion AVG is not a suitable virus, firewall protection.

i know its free but the software quality is just not there.

may i suggest you download NOD32 from Antivirus and Antispyware Software - Download ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security and eliminate viruses (30 day trial).uninstall avg, install nod32, update nod32 and do a full system scan. and then run malware bytes.

i would also try and run from a command prompt "chkdsk /f /r" just incase you have bad sectors.

locking up of a PC can be numerous things. overheating, virus, PSU, bad hard drive etc.

i would then run Ccleaner to remove any junk and then run defraggler and defrag the drive.

if i have missed something i am sorry, i have been up 36 hours.

OK bob, I think I can help you with that UPNP error. Danzil made some good suggestions, namely about AVG, and the various reasons a computer can lock up.

Let's take care of that error first though, and see how it goes.

First, a word of warning on using regedit:

Editing the Registry incorrectly can damage your install of Windows. Make sure you have recent backups, and be sure to follow all instructions carefully.

Click Start, then Run.

Into the run box, type regedit

Press enter to open the registry editor

Navigate through the folders on the left to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host

Right-click on the UPnP Device Host folder, and select 'Permissions'.

Click 'Add', then click 'Find Now', scroll down to the 'Local Service' user and double click, then click OK.

Click on 'Local Service' in the users list, and change the permissions underneath to 'Full Control' by ticking the box.

Once you've done that, close the registry editor.

Now click Start, then Run again, and type services.msc

Press enter.

Scroll through the list of services until you find 'Universal Plug and Play Device Host'

Right-click it, and select start.

Post back if you have any difficulties, and to let us know how you get on.

If Start is greyed out, then the service may already be running, which is good.

When you look at the 'Universal Plug and Play Device Host', under the 'Status' heading, what does it say?

Are you sure you are looking at the services window? It should look like the window below:

http://www.neosoft-tools.com/articles/images/services_example.gif

It should say 'Started' or 'Stopped' in the status column next to 'Universal Plug and Play Device Host'

Well spotted Randy,

That's the correct window, but the Universal Plug and Play service does seem to be disabled.

Right-click on it, and choose 'Properties'. Once you have the properties window up, change the startup type to 'Automatic' and then click on the 'Start' button.

If you can't find any of that just say and I'll get some screenshots up.

Bob, I've found a thread on another forum from someone with similar freezing problems, apparently caused by Tune Up Utilities.

I notice form your services that you have Tune Up Utilities installed. I'd consider uninstalling it to see if the problem goes away. Using such programs has dubious benefit in my opinion, and their registry cleaner fuctions can sometimes cause harm to your install of windows.

Uninstall it using Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, then re-start your PC, and make sure the Universal plug and play service is started and running.

This problem seems to jusk keep on going, but hopefully we'll get there and at least find out the cause.

What does it say under those new events? 7000 and 7001 are caused by a service failing to start due to dependancies, which means that a service can't find another service it needs to work. I'd need to know what the description of the event is to advise you further.

If you can post a Belarc report then go ahead, it might just turn up something we've overlooked until now.

Ok Bob, it looks like the service we tried to fix earlier can't start, because it depends on another one that isn't running.

It's very strange that these should be turned off. These services come enabled by default in XP. I'm thinking that Tune-up utilities has perhaps run rampage through them, and turned off those that it deems unncessary.

Open up the services window like before, the one where you looked for the Universal Plug and play service.

This time look for 'SSDP Discovery Service' and right-click it, and select properties. Make sure it is set to 'Automatic' and that it is started.

I got your Belarc report, and I won't post it here due to the size/contents. The problem could be a wide range of things, hardware or software, so the best thing to do is keep fixing things until it hopefully stops.

Now I am not using tuneup how can I check and repair registry

hi Bob, I will leave the rest to my friend Snow, however I would like to point out that these so called registry utilities are not able to repair a damaged registry where items have been wrongly removed in the first place, quite often by these registry tools.

For that is all they ever do, remove entries. They cannot possibly put entries back as there is no program yet that can even tell what is missing in the first place, as all registries become vastly different from the original as programs are added or removed, the registry is changed. So therefore there can be no standard for any of these so called cleaners to work from.

it is for these reasons that we do not like them, I call myself some sort of expert, and believe me I don't know enough about the registry to even begin to think I could use one of these tools correctly and not do damage.

So what chance any one with only basic knowledge?

I feel all registry tools are a mild form of scam, they take your money and then run.

Regards

Nev.
