Hi, thanks for the help in advance. I'm having some mouse trouble at the moment. Vista has literally stopped recognizing any/all mice I've tried to install. It did the same with my old mouse, so I went out and bought a new one today and it's doing the same. I've installed the new software for the device and it works for two or three seconds before completely freezing. I've tried going to device manager and uninstalling the device (which shows up only as HiD compliant mouse under "mice and other pointing devices), but it works again for two or three seconds then stops. I'm not sure whether it's the port at issue either because it recognizes my iPod cord & camera when I plug those into it. It just seems to be mice that it's taking exception to. Any ideas?

Yeah, I have tried it in four different ports and get much of the same response. Works for two or three seconds then stops.

Hello there.

Firstly try and update of your USB ports via device manager.

Possibly download your latest chipset for your make and model of computer from the makers website as this usaly contains USB hardware drivers.

Could you please state make and models of mice you have been trying to install or use?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm currently using a Packard Bell Easynote. I had a look at their website for the chipset download and got lost in the mix. Is there any way you could link me to which I'd need to download?

As for the mice, I've been trying to use a Speedlink Dual Light Mouse and a run of the mill Technika Optical mouse, both of which stated were compatible with Vista.

Hello there.

Ok firstly what is the make and model of your PC/laptop?

Then lets see if we can get you that chipset.

Ok the Technika mouse makes are sorry to say are rubbish.I would never purchase anything under that brand.

I have not heard of the other brand.

I would stick to Logitech brands for your mouse.

The laptop is a Packard Bell Easynote. Haha, yeah, I know about Technika, but it did work for more than 8 months then stopped all of a sudden (and hasn't worked since).

None.

In device manager individualy update drivers via the highlight and right click update driver.

Or you can possibly try uninstall the USB port that the mouse is plugged into then restart the laptop and let new hardware wizard reinstall it.

There maybe a possible conflict with other drivers you have installed for other external hardware you use.

The mouse works in none of the USB ports, should I uninstall them all and restart?

I actualy think the mouse is the issue not the ports.Just lets try one port for now.

Hi, just restarted the laptop twice after uninstalling USB ports and mice. First time I used the Speedlink mouse and the second time I used the Technika. Each time I got the same result: mouse works for one or two seconds after the system announces new hardware has been installed but then stops responding.

Hi

If all other USB devices work then i would have to say its the mouse. Try to exchange the new one and ask them to test it before you take it home.

I had a similar problem and it was a faulty mouse in the end.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I've tried three different mice now (two of them brand new) and am getting the same result with them all. Surely they can't all be faulty?

Having read through the post so far, I think we are in the position of not being sure if it is the mouse or your computer, the only sure way is to try the mouse on another computer, if you have one available, or can go round to a friends and try it there etc.

Let us know please.

Nev.

Hi Ok, at least we know it isn't the mouse.

What we need now is a PSP2 adapter to USB so you can try plugging the mouse into a PSP2 port. Some usb mice did come with an adapter included, my Logiteck one did as an example, but does your machine have a PSP2 port (green round socket)?

That would at least prove if there is a USB problem.

Hi, the mouse does have a PSP2 adapter but my laptop doesn't have a PSP2 port, only four USB ports.

Hi, Sorry, I missed seeing that this is a laptop, in that case it must have a touch pad, does that work OK? or is that also dead?

Hey, yeah the touchpad works absolutely fine without any problems.

Hi again, this is strange that the touchpad works OK but an external mouse doesn't.

However, go back into device manager, ("Start" > Run > type in- devmgmt.msc )

Find "Mice and other pointing devices" there should be a small box with a + in it, click this to expand which should bring up the mouse you have plugged in. Double click it which should bring up the mouse properties, then the tab "power management" Check if there is a tick in the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" if ticked remove it.

Let us know what you find.

Hey, just went and checked to see if it was ticked and it wasn't. In fact, the option to tick it doesn't even seem to be there as the box is shaded grey and won't allow me to tick/untick anything.

Posted

OK, thats not the problem then, but in fact unticking the one underneath, which should be to allow the mouse to wake the system up, will then liven up the first, but you don't want that.

I am now stumped, so will have to wait for someone else to come back, I have a Toshiba laptop plus separate mouse, and have searched just about everywhere in it, and also my desktop, but can see nothing that could be of help for you I am afraid.

There must be a reason, so hope someone knows it.

Sorry,

Nev.
