Vista not recognizing various mice.

OK, thats not the problem then, but in fact unticking the one underneath, which should be to allow the mouse to wake the system up, will then liven up the first, but you don't want that.

I am now stumped, so will have to wait for someone else to come back, I have a Toshiba laptop plus separate mouse, and have searched just about everywhere in it, and also my desktop, but can see nothing that could be of help for you I am afraid.

There must be a reason, so hope someone knows it.

Thanks so much for you help anyway, at least I now know it's a problem with my laptop and not any of the external hardware. You guys are tops.

Hi, after a bit more thought, if you are definitely not seeing any yellow ! marks or red? marks in device manager and everything else seems OK, how does the system run otherwise, any unwanted popups for example, it may well be a virus or other malware, so what security in antivirus, antispyware do you have and also which firewall.

Hi, thanks for coming back. The only irregularity I can really point out is that when my last mouse (the Technika I'd been using for almost 8 months) started to not respond, Windows would take a long time to start up before advising me to start in Safe Mode. I noticed that this was only when I started the computer with the mouse already in the USB. If I started it without it, everything worked fine, albeit when I did plug it in when the system had started, it still failed to recognize it.

 

I should probably also point out that the USB port clearly knows there's something plugged into it. At the minute with my newest mouse, it installs it as a Human Interface Device and the red light goes on under the mouse itself, etc., etc.

Ok open command prompt via right click and run as admin.

 

Type in sfc /scannow and hit enter please tell me the end result.

 

Ok now I am not sure of this one but could you enter BIOS/setup and check if there such thing as USB support enabled or disabled in BIOS.It should be enabled if it exists in your BIOS.

Hi, I just did the scannow command and it came out with the following:

 

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation".

 

I'm going to check the BIOS when I restart in the morning, I'll let you know then. Thanks for coming back, by the way!

Hi again, once you have had a look in the BIOS please let us know what you find, but if nothing obvious, can you try it in safe mode and see if the mouse works then.

If not go back again to device manager and see if the touch pad can be disabled, just in case the touch pad is overriding the external mouse.

Be careful about that though as disabling the touch pad may finish up with no control of mouse pointer at all. Just let us know if it can be disabled.
