In my opinion it could have been IE8 which is buggy with XP or the fact you had two active firewalls running. Or a combination of the two.

 

It could have also had something to do with your security suite.

 

If you really want to know what worked do a system restore to mess it all up again. Then try one fix at a time.

 

That's what I would do because I can't stand not to know what caused an issue. But I think you might be happy to just leave it fixed.
