Graphics issue

So my graphics card has stopped responding, and lines have appeared on my monitor(I've tried 2 monitors, it's the same) and in device manager, it reports the graphic card having issues runnings...

I took a print screen and the lines don't appear in the screenshot so I'm guessing it's solely a graphics card issue? It's the same issue with the other monitor that I use and when I change the colour/resolution the lines/dots move to a different place. I want someone to possibly confirm it before I end up buying a new card

 

...and what card should I buy? It was a GeForce 8800 GT which seems like a good card, should I buy the same or is there a cheaper card with the same setup/power as that one?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

 

First thing I would do is power off the computer.

 

Disconnect from power outlet.

 

Open her up touch power supply for a few seconds.

 

Give internals a good clean.

 

Make sure if the graphics card is PCI slot then resit it into its slot.

 

Check any internal and external cables or even try diffrent external cables.

 

Download and run Speedfan and psot a screen shot for me please:

 

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

 

Let me know how it goes.

Hey, thanks for the super fast reply

 

I opened the case and done a full sweep of cleaning the PC. The card is PCI-Express, Hmm although I don't have any spare cables laying around.

 

Here is the picture including the speed fan results including a picture showing my graphics card having an error

The temperature of the PC Core is around 33-36C, although I've touched the graphics card plasic part and it basically burned my hand :p any way of checking the temperature for that? It doesn't seem to recognise it...which is why I'm wondering if my graphics card is dead basically?

Ok first lets try the latest driver for the card:

 

Use drop down boxes to fill in your information:

 

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

 

Then click graphics card driver button for your latest driver.

 

Oh yeah the card would be hot.:)

 

Is there a fan on that card and is it spinning freely?

 

Speedfan is not even registering your graphics card the temp is showing your CPU.

Yeah I have the latest drivers installed for the graphics card and the fan is spinning as normal without any interuptions. Windows encountered a problem with nvlddmkm which has to do with the graphics card and it seems to have disabled it/not working...

 

Do you think this problem would be solved with a new graphics card or do you think the issue lies elsewhere?

Jelly bean is right... you said you use GeForce 8800 GT, my mates play allot of cod4 on it... and his suddently stopes and the monitor goes off.. may you should chek if its your monitor and just see if the plugs are in right.... if not like Jelly bean has said update your giforce drivers from the NVIDIA website... also you may want to clean out your system using defrag and CCleaner a freeware can be downloaded it cleans your reg, connect only one minitor and fix your resolution to normal again, ... but sounds like your graphics card is toast man.

 

 

alternative:

 

unintall the geforce drivers

 

shut down pc

 

install the video card

 

use PCI express as the primary driver -- does it recognise the video card? should be able to find the device

 

chek also device manager under display adapters to see if PCI is listed...or try reintalling motherbaord drivers?

 

If its a big problem and you dont want to spend more money... can also reinstall everything by deleting the vista partion, format the partition, and then creating a new one using the vista CD... and then reintall all your graphics and sound drivers..

Thanks for the help, I installed a new graphics card and the problem has disappeared :) ...although I don't know what caused the card to malfunction :/

That is brilliant.

 

It could be plain and simple hardware failure or over heating caused the problem.It is hard to say but at least your up and running now.
