Guest Eric Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I am creating a simulated Domain (non-production) in VMS and I need to know since this is the first. Does the DC and DNS need to run on the same server, because I create a serperate VM as a stand alone DNS Server? Because, during the installation of the DC in the diagnostic phase it needs the DNS avaible. But, It say's I can continue, but do manual configuration to complete it successfully. I really don't want to configure it manually and I rather the Wizard do it all, but I am not sure if this is the normal and sercure way to install the DC with the DNS. -- Eric Miller

Pleaes make sure that you configure the TCP/IP's IP and DNS before you dcpromo tho. -- Jabez Gan Microsoft MVP: Windows Server - File Storage "Eric" <Eric@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9576294C-25D5-4E73-A4B0-8012BDA6E46B@microsoft.com... >I am creating a simulated Domain (non-production) in VMS and I need to know > since this is the first. > > Does the DC and DNS need to run on the same server, because I create a > serperate VM as a stand alone DNS Server? Guest Eric Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Re: DC and DNS Thanks, I am now in the TCP/IP dialog box, but I don't now what to enter in as a IP in the "Use the following IP". Do I use a IP other than the 192.168.. range like 10... something? I read this before about using different IP address for a local network other than 192.168.., but sofar I cann't find it. -- Eric Miller "Jabez Gan [MVP]" wrote: > Yes DNS will be installed when you dcpromo. Guest Eric Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 RE: DC and DNS I found a good example in the Help and Support Guide called "Setting up the infrastructure" under VPN and this is simular to what I want to do. Because I will have a family member log in to do some development. I live in California and he lives in Witchita. Would this be a good example to simulate? -- Eric Miller "Eric" wrote: > I am creating a simulated Domain (non-production) in VMS and I need to know > since this is the first. > > Does the DC and DNS need to run on the same server, because I create a > serperate VM as a stand alone DNS Server? Guest Jabez Gan [MVP] Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Re: DC and DNS Hey Eric, Are you setting up this server in your own houes? Or will it be for a company? If it's going to be for a company, I thikn it's best that you hire a consultant to fix it up for you... if you are just going to play around in your own house, then just follow the instructions here: Yes, you need to use an IP like 192.168.0.1 (for example). You set the IP yourself. 192.168.x.x is a private IP, means externally people won't be able to see this IP (or connect). They will need to connect to a public IP and the public IP will then link to your private IP. -- Jabez Gan Microsoft MVP: Windows Server - File Storage "Eric" <Eric@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5C9DCD08-81D4-4CE1-A467-2454BC9D7CB9@microsoft.com... >I found a good example in the Help and Support Guide called "Setting up the > infrastructure" under VPN and this is simular to what I want to do. > Because > I will have a family member log in to do some development. Guest Eric Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Re: DC and DNS Thanks, this is just to play around and for me to understand how everything works. Guest Eric Miller Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Re: DC and DNS I install an enterprise root certification authority, but when I'm configuring for automatic certificate allocation in the Set Wizard after I select the Computer Certificate template, I don't see the certicate I created during the installion of the Certificate Server. My CA info directory is in the "All User Shared Directory" and the CA is there. and I see the CatRoot, CatRoot2 and CertLog in the System32 directory with all the correct info. Why is it not showing up in this list under Name and Computer? and when I view the properties of the "Computer" template in the "Automatic Certificate Request Authorities" it's not showing in the "Certificate authrities" Is this correct or what did I miss during the install of the Server?
