DHCP with multiple DCs

Recommended Posts

Our DC is a W2K3 Enterprise Server. We have a backup DC /webserver.

Does it make sense to run DHCP from both servers? There doesn't seem to be

a way to replicate DHCP servers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello ChuckN,

Just split your scope 50/50 or 60/40 and exclude the part that the other

one is hosting. In case of a failure or longer downtime for one server activate

the excluded part. Thats all.

Best regards

The other possible way and this does depend on the size and speed of your

network, is to setup the two servers and leave one unauthorised and

unactivated. When you need the other server, turn on conflict detection

which means the DHCP server will check to see if an IP address is already in

use before responding to the client. If you have a large network this is not

a good idea as it could generate lots of traffic.

Don't forget, unless you've changed the lease length from the default of

eight days, you've got a little while before the DHCP clients drop-off the

network.

Re: DHCP with multiple DCs

netsh is the best tool for dumping the config to a text file in 2003. The

text file can then be edited manually and re-input with netsh.

My advice is to set the scopes identically on both servers, but then mask

off the 60/40 with exclusions. Then, if a server goes offline, the exclusions

can always be removed to give one server full contol.

Dont forget that two servers will mean two helper addresses on any remote

routers.
