Hi - hoping someone can help.

I have a brand new HP Pavillion dv3 notebook running Vista Home Premium. So few minutes ago the screen froze and I had to do a manual shutdown (you know, holding in the button). After I started it up again, the lights next to the caps lock and scroll lock were flashing (4 flashes then a pause). I dd a restart and nothing has changed. Any thoughts on why the lights are flashing - I'm sure they weren't doing it before as that would have drove me mad as it's doing now.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Kate, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

Does the laptop turn on at all?

Can you get into windows, or do you just get a blank screen?

According to HP, this error code is caused by a failure of the graphics chip. If you are currently using the laptop however, then this doesn't seem to be correct, as you would just have a blank screen.

I found this:

My caps lock and scroll lock lights kept on flashing, so I shut down the computer, removed the battery and power supply and pressed the power button for 10 seconds to remove any residual power.

Seems to have solved the problem.

Would be worth a try.

now that you mention it there was something funny when I restarted it. When the logo came up for the HP Advisor as it was loading (it does this everytime I start it) it also showed the same logo in the background but really big and lego looking. It's never done that before. Should I be worried?

If it is brand new then I would definately call HP about it, and tell them what's happened. It is possible that the graphics chip could be faulty or damaged, and would be worth investigating while the computer is still under warranty.

Make sure to mention the strange logo, which sounds like a graphics fault to me, when you talk to them.
