Hello

This morning my HP PC was working just fine but when I booted it up this afternoon I ended up with the message that said that Windows hadn't closed down properly - it offers me the opportunity to go into safe mode but when I select it all I get is a list of commands. Whether I choose to boot up in safe mode or normally I end up with the same result: a black screen. I tried restoring the system but I get the following error message (my pc is French so this is a rough translation):

No restauration point has been created on the computer's disc system. In order to create a restauration point please create the 'protection system'. When I click on 'protection system' I get the following message:

Your computer is functioning in a limited diagnostic state. If you use the restauration system in this limited state you cannot cancel the restauration. The help rubric is not available in this state. I can't get beyond this point.

Needless to say I have no back up discs nor a copy of Vista.

Some advice in how to proceed would be much appreciated!

Susie

Hi,

You can recover your system using the hidden restore partition.

Have a look at this HP document that shows you how to do a system recovery

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs*-* Performing an HP System Recovery in Windows Vista*

Basically start your PC, and press F11 straight away- that gets you into Recovery Manager.

You WILL lose all of your files you have stored, so if you don't want to do that let us know and we will look at other ways to get you up and running.

If all goes ok, make a set of recovery DVD's as soon as you can.

Thanks for the response - ideally I would prefer not to lose all my files - pls can you advise another way?

Just to add what little I know.

If the hard drive was damaged during an improper shutdown you should hook it up to another computer and hope you can retrieve your files.

Are you sure you are not choosing safemode with command prompt instead of just safemode?

Were you given the option of choosing Last Known Good Configuration?

In the link given by Tootech you can perform a Microsoft System Restore or do a Factory image recovery and you should also read the section Backing up files during recovery.

If you are unsure which direction you should go ask first.
