Problem with offline files in Vista and OpportunisticLocking

For those who have not come across this – any (Windows) SBS 2003 server where opportunistic locking is disabled will prevent Vista from syncing offline files.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264/en-us for more info.

Windows XP pro etc will however work fine.

The problem is that if you need to disable Opportunistic locking – and there are quite valid reasons for doing this, then well, you can’t sell Vista if the client wants offline files.

One workaround is to host the application requiring OppLock disabled on one server, and do the offline files from another server. But this is not the theory behind a “Small” business Server – i.e. Small business which can’t afford two servers.

I have searched long and far, but as yet I have not found any workaround for this – it just seems to be an issue still. Most of the articles on this subject finish with “you must have opp locks enabled” – which is not an answer.

So anyone else seen this or have an idea how to force Vista to Cache / Sync successfully like XP does??
