Guest lozza Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Hi Guys, something is really confusing me here, so please could someone step in and explain this to me in laymans terms, if possible.... 1) When I look at the size of the user profile (right my computer, properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings button) i see a number of accounts listed... all with the sizes of their profiles... all good 2) When I explore to the users profile (c:\documents&Settings\%username%).. which I understood is the users profile location in the file system and do properties on that usernames folder... I get an even bigger size than that in part 1 above.... So for example for a particular user, in Part 1 the size is about 817MB but in part 2 its about 1.8GB If I was to delete the profile from the system from within the section in part 1... will i still be left with nearly of 1GB space being used on the system somewhere? I was under the impression when deleting a profile it would automatically delete the c:\doc%sett\%username% folder at the same time? Very confused as to why the 2 sizes dont match.... and what the effect would deleting the profile from part 1 or deleting the profile directory under the file system Loz

Do you delete the account? Or do you delete the profile folder?
Guest lozza Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Re: Profile Size Basics Hi Pegasus... My main concern is around why the 2 size values are different...? i.e. the size of the profile in User Profiles (right click my comp, proprties, advanced, user profiles) and in the file system c:\D&S\username are so different. If I deleted the profile from User Profiles (which is smaller) what effect would that have on the c:\D&S\username folder size. Would it delete that whole folder? or would it leave some files still there (which where causing the size difference) I'm not sure if i;m being very clear here. Effectively what sprang to mind was why the Reported Profile Size differs to the user folder in c:\D&S. I thought c:\D&S\username was the users profile... and therefore the 2 sizes shoud have matched Loz "Pegasus (MVP)" wrote: > > "lozza" <lozza@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:7BE97ABE-CE3A-4415-9D6C-264A8D8103EA@microsoft.com... > > Hi Guys, > > > > something is really confusing me here, so please could someone step in and > > explain this to me in laymans terms, if possible.... > > > > 1) When I look at the size of the user profile (right my computer, > > properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings button) i see a number of > > accounts listed... all with the sizes of their profiles... all good > > > > 2) When I explore to the users profile > > (c:\documents&Settings\%username%).. > > which I understood is the users profile location in the file system and do > > properties on that usernames folder... Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Re: Profile Size Basics Sorry, I am still not clear what you mean when you write "...delete user profile". Please elaborate. Guest lozza Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Re: Profile Size Basics Okay... Either 1) Right Click My Computer, Select Properties, Select Advanced Tab, Click Settings on the User Profiles Section, Hihglight a User and then hit the Delete Button. (This window also shows a size of all the User Profiles) or 2) Go to the folder c:\Documents and Settings\<Username> and delete this folder. This folder is different in size to the User profile in Step 1. Why is this? Does that make sense. If not perhaps you could tell me why this doesnt make sense, as i;m definately confused... Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Re: Profile Size Basics Deleting the profile the way you do it will delete the profile folder in "Documents and Settings" (which you can easily confirm by creating a test user, logging on as him, rebooting, then deleting his profile with your method. The discrepancy you observe probable comes from not considering hidden files. Do this do find out the true size: - Click Start / Run / cmd {OK} - Type this command: dir /s /a "c:\Documents and Settings\Problem User"{Enter} At the very end you will see the true figures for this folder, including any hidden files and folders.
