Guest Jeff Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Hey I've performed a fresh installation of windows server 2003 enterprise. After installation I've promoted this this machine to primary domain controller. After I'd promoted it do dc then I cannot find the "this computer" in the login screen. I find only the netbios name of the domain in that "log on to" drop down list this PDC cannot use netbios domain name to ping the domain it's set to be a controller of... If I use fully qualified dns name then it works... Lets say dns is: test.local, the I can ping using test.local, but ping TEST doesn't work any suggestion?

The option to logon locally on a DC does not exist once it is a DC. Are you using WINS? Is NetBIOS disabled? -- Regards, Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. Guest Jeff Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Re: login contain no "this computer" WINS are installed. In tcp/ip settings on the pdc in WINS tab I've set the WINS server to be the pdc - I mean here I use use the ip address of the pdc not 127.0.0.1/localhost NetBIOS over tcp/ip where set to default. I've changed it to "enable netbios over tcp/ip" and still I cannot ping the domain from pdc... pdc is using static ip any suggestions?
Guest Jeff Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Re: login contain no "this computer" solved, my fully qualified domain name is test.local. When I as pinging I used only TEST.. I read in another post here that when pinging domain names I must use full name.. so then I tryed using test.local and it works "Jeff" <no_email_address> wrote in message news:O5WvFlCYIHA.4440@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > WINS are installed. Keep in mind, each domain controller registers one under the test.local zone. It looks like this: (same as parent) A 192.x.x.x. If you want to ping just 'test' and get just ONE of the DCs to respond (for whatever reason), you can simply create a static WINS entry for it providing the IP of the DC you want to respond. Ace
