Sahra Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Hi, I've lost all the sound on my pc, and my device manager has a yellow exclamation mark next to the multimedia audio controller. When I try to update it, i just get a pop up asking me to run the cd or select a location for the driver. I have no idea what to do - the sound was fine the last time i used my pc! Please help! Quote

Jelly Bean Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Yes that was excellent I needed the service tag number. You have a Dell OptiPlex GX1. It shows no driver update for your sound. What operating system is it running? Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................

Jelly Bean Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Darn I knew you would say something diffrent from what the origonal OS was. Ok I found this: Installing Crystal Semiconductor CS4232/CS4236 PnP Driver You may have to tweek the guide a litle to see if it works. However in device manager you can try a roll back of the driver. Or a system restore to just before your sound stopped. Or right click on the device in manager and choose to select a driver yourself. Then you can see if the driver is listed. This is showing the driver is not for Pro or are you using Windows 2000 Pro? Dell dont do a driver download for Pro either. Maybe some one else can help while I search out this. Jelly Bean Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Or possibly this download will work: Realtek AC'97 Driver (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003) - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Sahra Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 Hi, no sorry they don't work - I can't find the file that the 1st link suggests, and don't have the CD-ROM it refers to either. On the 2nd one, nothing happens when the DOWNLOAD now button is pressed................ I don't know how to do a system restore, and there is no option to roll back the driver either (although I could be doing this completely wrong................) I went to the 'about windows' on the task bar and it definately said Windows XP Pro v 5.1 Quote
Jelly Bean Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 On the realtek link I posted click on download then a bar at the top of the window in IE should appear, right click on it and choose download file. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Sahra Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 I did this, and then got the screen prompts on reboot to install the thing, and i've no idea where it downloaded to.......- Quote
Jelly Bean Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Did you download and save or download and run? Is it in downloaded files or recived files? Use windows search. I would download and run not download and save. Check device manager and try a right click update driver now? Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Sahra Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 No sorry, that's not happening, I still get the install box asking for the CD - I've found the download but it's an application, so it won't let me point the update at it..... Quote
danzil Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 have you as suggested by jelly bean tried a system restore as yet..... what happen when you right click the yellow exclamation and then go to "update driver"then click on "install from a list or spefic location" then click "dont search, i will choose a driver to install", hopefully this will pick up your old driver if so highlight it then click on next. see if that works. i would suggest a system restore first. if you do get a driver listed please post back what it is. we can then direct you to the latest version of that driver regards danzil Quote Windows 10 Pro x64Aqua Jeantech Gaming case550watt psu.MSI Gaming Board32GB DDR3 Corsair gaming RamGenuine Intel i7 3.2Ghz4 x 24x dvdrw 150GB SSD750GB Hybrid Drive256 RAID PCI/E SSD for OSand loads of other bits i really dont need :D
Plastic Nev Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Hi, I noticed earlier you said you don't know how to do a system restore. This is a facility within Windows to enable you to take your system back to a time when it was working correctly. To get to system restore, click start, go to all programs, accessories, system tools, then click on system restore. Once the system restore page has opened, make sure the radio button for "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is checked. (just click on it to do so) then click the "next" button. On the calendar, which should show September, there is a back arrow top left to go back to last month or the month before that, if it is still set to default it should go back to June as the earliest month you can restore back to. Just follow the instructions and select a date that you know is prior to when your sound went off. All documents and files will still be OK but any programs installed since that date will have to be reinstalled. Hope that is of help. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
