I tried to use system restore several times over the last few days, even trying it using a benchmark only one day old. It goes through the whole bit but takes longer than I remember it and then when it comes up to the screen of accepting the changes, it says that nothing was changed and try a different benchmark day. I have tried several and I always get the same result. There is something missing. My XP pro is a full version on a CD. Some CD's have provisions to correct installations or you can reinstall with no problem.. Does XP do that? Would a reinstall screw up everything?

Some 4 months ago I installed a 160G HD and cloned the old 60G to it and am using the 160 now as C.

I went into the bios and changed the boot to the old disk just to see if the restore worked on the old one but it says there are a couple dll's missing and it won't load anymore so I changed it back. Any hints? I suppose I could jot down the names and retrieve them from the other disk but I haven't bothered as yet.

You can run a Windows XP repair install. To do this you need to boot

from your installation media, and at the first screen, push enter to

continue, accept the license agreement, and setup should find your old

installation of Windows. When/if it does, press 'R' to begin a repair

install. The repair will reinstall the operating system, kicking out

drivers, updates, but keep your data intact.

Let's see if System Restore will function in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and perform a test restore using the following link.

If there are any Norton applications installed, take a look at this page.

Here are some more troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails

to restore:

The Event Viewer can sometimes be helpful in tracking down errors.
