Hiya,

I'm not sure if this is in the right place as I'm not very computer literate!

I have service pack 3 on my PC (windows XP) and I cannot install the automatic updates. The yellow icon appears at the bottom right hand screen and it trys to install but fails.

Also every time my PC shuts down it says it will install updates but doesn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Hi Bubble,

Have you recently needed to have a Windows repair done, or a re-install of the operating system?

The problem you have is common to that situation, so please have a look here--

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

I have actually just finished looking at that before I posted on here. I tried method 1 but it didn't work. I tried to download the update agent but couldn't find the download or how to do it!

I think service pack 3 was recently installed. I have 11gb of free space of my PC so I think from what I've read that should be enough.

Should I uninstall service pack 3? I don't really understand much about PC's I'm afraid.

Thanks

Hi, I know those instructions look a bit hard, so understand why you would like to try the update agent, go to this page and click on the download link on it, the update agent should install it self from there.

Hi, that agent should just install and not give you that page, which version of Internet Explorer are you using or are you using a different browser such as Firefox or Opera?

Hi,

Is this (Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86) the only update you've had trouble installing?

I thought that might be the case, as I actually had this same problem a month or so ago.

Somehow Microsoft update is convinced that you have the .NET framework version 3.5 installed, when you don't. Then it tries to install an update to this, but since you don't have it, it fails.

I corrected the problem by installing .NET framework 3.5, re-booting, and then running windows update again.

Here is a link to the Microsoft page where you can download it:

Download details: .NET Framework 3.5

It goes right through to the end and says "set up error"

When it says how much is going to download it says 0 too which is odd!?

Do I need to uninstall anything first?

It sounds like you might have conflicting versions of .NET on your system. Try this .NET clean up tool:

http://d9p7ma.blu.livefilestore.com/y1primuHw3nhBarwZA4BBnsAh1l5IBj5s7dz4K9mVDaWO0oXPF-vGUO9KlAFYtICUBnbhvAoSp-LUxeIQgw-7Ll-g/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip?download

Download it, extact it, and run it. Re-boot the system after it has finished.

After you PC has restarted, try installing version 3.5 again. Let us know how it goes.
