Guest John Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 I want to give my computer to charity but my user name shows up under the start button and I need to know how to change the user name for windows 98 to Administrator. I do not have a password associated with it. When I go to profiles it only asks me to set up a new user. Thanks

(Start > Run > Regedit > OK) Find the following registery key in the left pane. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion In the right pane look for "Registered Owner" in the Name column The Data column for this entry will be the current owner name. In the right pane of Regedit, RIGHT click on The "Registered Owner" key name and select "Modify" from the pop up menu. Replace the old name with a new one and click OK. Then exit Regedit. Guest Ron Badour Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Re: 98 User Name Change for Charity If your computer has ever contained any sensitive data, you must do much more than change the registered user as the data can be sprinkled throughout the registry and even files which have been deleted may be able to be retrieved with inexpensive software. What I would do is wipe the hard disk with a format, reinstall windows with all updates and correct drivers, defrag the drive and then overwrite the "blank" portion of the hard drive with software such as Eraser, http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2008 "John" <John@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:92B000E0-FBFE-4C51-8862-CE06B53654EE@microsoft.com... >I want to give my computer to charity but my user name shows up under the > start button and I need to know how to change the user name for windows 98 > to > Administrator.
