Hi all,

i want to replace the fan in my pc as it sounds awful when under load, its an 80mm AKASA model DFB923812H DC BRUSHLESS FAN 12V 4.1W BALL BEARING type with a 4 PIN connector at motherboard end, the motherboard is a D945GCZ 775 socket.

Im wondering if it might be worthwhile installing (if possible) a new heatsink/fan directly over the cpu AND a seperate case fan as there is an empty 3 pin connector which says front fan.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks Darren

Hi Darren,

The fan is probably old, and while a good make, will be worn out. Replacing it with another 80mm fan would be a good option, if the current heatsink keeps the temperatures low enough. For this to work though the fan has to be an ordinary 80mm secured with screws; NOT one molded into a plastic harness.

I'd recommend Xilence redwing fans, as they are relatively cheap high-performace fans that are very quiet.

Here is the 80mm Version:

Xilence Red Wing 80mm Quiet Fan - 3&4pin connection - Ebuyer

(£2.96inc vat)

If you are looking to replace the whole heatsink then this would be a good option:

Akasa AK 965 (Socket 775) Aluminium with Copper Base Processor Cooler - Ebuyer

The red wing fan i ordered turned up this morning and i went to install it but the wiring is different, mine has a small rectangular 4 pin connector whereas the red wing has a small rectangular 3 pin connection & a larger 4 pin connection so i wont be able to plug it in where the old one came from, there are small 3 pin fan connections marked up on the motherboard but i dont want to plug it in one of those in case it doesnt work the same as the old one....i think although its an 80mm case fan type that its actually coolling the cpu??

The 4pin connector for the CPU fan will simply be a normal 3pin with an extra wire, which will be used for either a temperature senor or to control the fans speed.

You could probably wedge the 3pin connector down onto the 4pin one (not good practice, but I've done it before).

Connect the old fan to see which pin goes to which wire. The wires you need to match are the Black, Red and Yellow ones. The unnessarry 4th one will probably be white.

You can also use any of the normal 3pin fan connectors on the motherboard. They will all work the same, and power the fan no problem.

thanks for the reply snow, the fan will indeed power up from one of the 3 pin connectors marked "fan" but my question is will it still cool the cpu (if as i presume thats what it does) being connected to a 3 pin plug as it then wouldnt be speed controlled.

The 4th wire on existing fan is orange so im assuming thats the speed controller part of it??

Would it be just as easy to find another one that is 4 pin controlled to replace the noisy one??

Also whats the larger plug on the red wing for???

No problem,

It will cool the CPU just fine, a quiet fan like a redwing won't really need speed control.

The big connector is a standard molex power connector. It is designed to connect to a spare connector from the computers power supply in case you don't have a spare fan slot on the motherboard.
