hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Im thinking of replacing my floppy drive as one of my many ongoing project upgrades with something i might actually use!! Any suggestions as to what else i could install of some use or is it just card readers that fit those slots?? thanks in advance Quote
Jelly Bean Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Hello. I am not sure realy. I installed a floppy in my new build due to others needing help and I need the floppy. I did install a card reader also. Never thought of what other items could be fitted. I have a spare slot maybe the guys can come up with an idea for both of us. Plastic Nev Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 A lot depends on the slot and it's shape, however if it is the standard width for DVD/CD drives, then if you already have a DVD/CD drive, and also card readers, it just may be usefull to fit another DVD/CD r/w drive for copying from one drive to another, otherwise there isn't much else will go in there. hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 Mines a floppy drive slot so preferably something that would be a direct replacement, im thinking card reader as i dont have one was just wondering what else i could get but it seems the answer is not a lot...........card reader or floppy drive! Plastic Nev Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I am afraid so, though if you wanted, you could make a strip of plastic or metal to fit, then fit some flashing lights to it. It would look good but be not a lot of use!!!! :D :D Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 (edited) thats certainly a novel idea, can you be more descriptive of the flashing lights so i can visualize and eventually build it lol Edited September 8, 2009 by hypnosis75 Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 A pity you don't live a little closer, the computer and equipment dealer on our local market has lots of fancy gizmo's for decoration purposes, and fancy flashing strips of LED lights is something I remember seeing on his stall. As well as serious stuff like new hard drives, graphics cards, laptops and all the bits to do a self build, he also caters for the more frivolous with see through cases, and strip lights to go in them, silly coke bottles that bend and twist to music, fancy fans, toy cars that lift up on their back wheels all USB powered. he has a great sense of humour that guy. hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 probably just as well i dont live closer as my 2 year old daughter would want me to buy the whole stall, like most kids she loves flashing lights! Quote
hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 but in all seriousness i think its gonna have to be a card reader, thats something we could actually make use of to transfer files pics etc, are they all about the same or is there one anyone could recommend?? Quote
snow Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 A card reader would be a sensable and practical thing to put into a 3.5" bay. They are all pretty similar these days, and since they're not exactly complicated a cheap model will do fine, such as: All in 1 Internal Card Reader Plus One USB2.0 Port (Black) - Ebuyer Others have extra ports on them such as more USB, Firewire, and audio ports. hypnosis75 Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 im sure i looked at a very similar one to that earlier on amazon, only thing that puts me off buying from ebuyer is the extortionate delivery charge! How do they connect?? As in do i need to check to make sure my motherboard has the correct plug/fittings?? Quote
snow Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 From what I've seen, the simple ones like in my last post use a 9 pin USB header connection on the motherboard. You can check to see if you have one spare. It should be a rectangular slot with 9 metal pins in it, with USB written on the board beside it. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
