Fatcockney Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 I have a Packard Bell Intel Dual Core Desktop with 2gb RAM. In the last week my throughput has died. Today I ran a text throughput test which showed my throughput at 18kbs when a normal DSL connection would be at 220kbs+. I run Eusing Registry cleaner every day, there are few issues. I also run FinitySoft Memory Manager and there is plenty of RAM available. I'm running Defender and AVG security systems, neither of which are detecting any issues whatsoever. One week ago, I could download from external sources at 150k+, now I'm treading water. Any ideas please from this Braintrust?? Regards Quote
Fatcockney Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 I should add that this desktop is directly connected to the router (Netgear DG834G) and there are three other laptops accessing this router. None of them have the issue I have, so I'm assuming it's my desktop that's hit........or is it??? (as an example, my partner can stream video from ITV Player without it visibly buffering. If I try that, it plays for 6 seconds then buffers for 30 seconds) Quote
Tootech Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Hi, I would uninstall your reg cleaner. They sit on very dodgy ground and are not needed for everyday computer use. Sometimes they can actually harm a working system. I googled your memory manager and Avira antivirus picked up a virus on one of Finitysofts pages - thats not good The page problem page is here FinitySoft Memory Manager I would advise removal of your memory manager, Vista doesn't need these products to run well. Hopefully one of the forums security specialists will have a look at it as you may need a full system clean up. That could well bring your Internet speed back up. Quote
Fatcockney Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Hi Tootech. I appreciate the comments about Eusing and Finity Soft, but I only installed them AFTER the problems occured, so I can be fairly sure it isn't that that has been the issue. Any other suggestions please? I work from home and this performance is just killing me. Cheers Quote
RandyL Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I run Eusing Registry cleaner every day One week ago, I could download from external sources at 150k I only installed them AFTER the problems occured These statements seem to contradict each other. FinitySoft was flagged by Mcafee and caused a temporary hang on that page on my system. If these programs have not done too much damage already I agree with Tootech that you may need a full system cleanup. The first thing I would do is uninstall them and then do a complete set of malware scans. In my opinion AVG is not enough to protect you. Quote We are all members helping other members. Fatcockney Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 RandyL The statements aren't at all contradictory. Just over a week ago I could stream from BBC Iplayer or ITV Player with no issue. If I downloaded a file or refreshed a webpage it was instantaneous. Suddenly, this is no longer the case. The Speedtest tells me I am shipping at 18 kbs and the average is 240kbs. So I installed and ran Eusing Registry Cleaner and the FinitySoft Memory Manager to track issues. I have none. As of today, I have deinstalled both those products and my PC is no better. To refresh a page can take anything form two seconds to two minutes. I have Disk Cleaned, Defragmented, run PCTools scan against it. No issue is detected. I have tried all sorts of things, I have even restored to a week old version. No change. I could keep trying things, but I can't believe there isn't someone out there who has had similar? Regards Quote
Tootech Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I can offer another possible fix that has caused problems with Vista computers. Vista likes to update your drivers, and I have seen it update the LAN drivers and cause network slowdowns that look like the Internet is slow. Try a driver rollback on your network adapter. Go to Device Manager, find your network adapter, right click and select Properties. Navigate over to Driver and select Rollback Driver. If there is no other driver, it will be grayed out. Once done reboot and try a speed test again. Quote
chiaz Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Hey Fatcockney, After you have tried what Tootech posted above (and if it did not work), let's give your PC a checkup for any possible malware that is lurking in your system. Go HERE to run Panda ActiveScan 2.0Click the big green Scan now button If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes) Once the scan is completed, please hit the notepad icon next to the text Export to: Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop Post the contents of the ActiveScan.txt in your next reply. Quote
Fatcockney Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Thanks again Tootech, but it was indeed greyed out. I'll give Chiaz's suggestion a go. I've completely reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium today and its not changed anything one iota. Netspeed is reported as 19kbs...if I'm lucky! Quote
Fatcockney Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Tootech suggestion met with a greyed out component. Onto the next stage now. I completely reinstalled Windows today too and got rid of all programs that weren't default and went back to scratch. Netspeed now up to 19kbs.....great! Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Hi, I noticed earlier you said there are three other laptops connected with no problem. Now you have done a complete reinstall, I must ask was it a full reinstall and not a repair or similar? If a full reinstall that should have cleared any malware so I can only assume it is a connection issue, are all these connections hard wired or are they wireless? Is it possible to try your desktop on one of the laptops connections? Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Fatcockney Posted September 12, 2009 Author Posted September 12, 2009 Hi Nev, All the other connections are Wireless. There is another Desktop upstairs and that is Wireless too. I did a partial reload of the sysem so that it kept some of my folders in a separate area. It's still rubbish. Quote
RandyL Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Hi again. I meant no disrepect. I was only hoping to ascertain the facts as I often do with those type of utilities. If you have done a complete reinstall to original factory conditions and the problem still persists then it is obviously not related to the tune up program. I'll leave it to the experts and wish you the best of luck. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. chiaz Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Just delete this: C:\Users\Pel\Documents\Pel\fatcockney\Documents\Pe ls Personal Folder\DivXBundle.exe And your PC should be clean of malware. Quote
Fatcockney Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 Done that no change at all. Any other ideas please?? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Hi, we seem to have ruled out malware now with thanks to Chiaz for that. So it must be something to do with the connection itself, apart from making sure all plugs and sockets are firmly connected, and even a replacement of any cables to rule out the more simple faults, I am out of ideas. I am no network expert, so I will leave it for one of our network guys to get back to you. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
