Explorer search problem

I specify a word or phrase in file as ",.0" (without the quotes) but

it cannot find it. Seems to only find strings in the file name, not

the file contents.

What is wrong?

RE: Explorer search problem

Investigate following there in the Search dialog:

Other search options

Change preferences

More advanced options

RE: Explorer search problem

I am having the exact same problem and have for a long time with XP: the text

of files does not seem to be searched for the text in the "A word or phrase

in the file" field. Only the file names are searched. Files containing the

text are not listed, but those with the text in the title are included in the

results.

Please tell me how to fix this issue.

Thanks,

David

Use Agent Ransack (free download from the internet) or be prepared to do

some registry editing

Re: Explorer search problem

David,

did you follow the procedure I gave? Just to make sure that I wasn't

barking at the moon (hard to see with a total eclipse), then I went:

Win+F which brings up the search window || left the box labeled "All or part

of the file name" blank || entered ",.0" (without the quotes) in the field

labeled "A word or phrase in the file:" || Look in: Drives (C:;D:) -- I've

two logical drives || "When was it modified?" has the "Don't remember."

radio button selected || same goes for "What size is it?" || Under "More

advanced options" -- the Type of file: box is set to (All files and

Folders), Search system folders is checked, Search hidden files and folders

is checked, Search subfolders is checked, Case sensitive is unchecked,

Search tape backup is unchecked

Worked like a charm. Never knew I had so many files that somewhere, deep in

their bowels, contained ",.0".

Incidentally, I have zero files with ",.0" in the file name.

I even generated a text file containing ",.0" embedded in surrounding text

and the search found that file.

I'm interested in hearing the solution to your problem.

Re: Explorer search problem

Hi Karl,

Finally - I got it! Two things:

1. it seems you cannot specify a file name (e.g. *.txt) as well as the text

to search for - this causes search to look only in the file names that are

found matching the wildcard expansion. This is not supposed to work this way

- it is supposed to look at the file name AND the file text.

2. I had to tweak the registry to get Search to look in all files, even

those that are not registered. I did it this way:

http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1250/

Thanks for your help!

Re: Explorer search problem

David,

Glad to hear that you now have a working solution and glad to have been of

any assistance.

Here is another tip on searching re the extension peculiarity feature of XP:

Let's say you want to find all instances of eula.txt.

type eula*.txt in the search box.

In fact,if you wanted to find all .msc files (the management system consoles

such as DevMgmt.msc), then type *.msc in the search box.

Aren't computers fun?
