Optical fiber (O.T.?)

Hi all.

I'm very sorry for the O.T., but I really don't know where to post my

question.

Is it a good idea to connect two ethernet 100Mbits LANs of two

separated buidings (distance about 60 meters) with an underground

optical fiber cable connected to 2 switches (1 each building) each

with a fiber-module ?

I mean, is it safe for the risk of lightnings, electric potential

differences between buildings and other electric or electic-magnetic

problems that could fry or damage my LANs ?

Thanks a lot for the help, and excuse me for my bad english....

Bye bye, Rosgiof.

Hi rosgiof. Since no one else has tried to answer your question, I'll give

it a try. My answers are inline:

Yes. Counting the 60 meters plus the length of cable you might need inside

the buildings, you could pretty easily go over the 90 meter limit for Cat

cable connections.

Yes, this is a big advantage of fiber- it is not affected by electromagnetic

interference.

Please take a little time to look at this tutorial to get you started on

Ok, Dan, thanks for the answer, you are very fine.

Now it's all clear.

Thanks also for the useful link.
