Guest Dapper Dan Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I would like to run a diagnostic tool to test the condition of the harddrive on our 6-7 year old Compaq laptop. It's been several years since I did this test and I have forgotten how to go about it. I understand Hitachi has taken over IBM's Travelstar line however I can't seem to find the specific tool for our model. I believe ours is an IBM Travelstar 10 GB, 4200 rpm. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks Dan

Guest Mike M Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Re: Harddrive diagnostic tool Dan, I'd start by downloading Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test from http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/technolo/dft/dftnew.htm and work from there. Drive Fitness Test Version 4.11 The Drive Fitness Test (DFT) quickly and reliably tests SCSI, IDE and SATA drives. The DFT analyze function performs read tests without overwriting customer data. Notes Ultrastar 10K300, Ultrastar 15K73 and DK32XX users, do not use DFT - Use the OGT Diagnostic Tool. Does not support Microdrive Digital Media products. Supports all Travelstar HDDs, except 8E, 10E and C4K series. <<<<<<<< Is your drive an 8E, 10E or C4K? If so I'd contact Hitachi for advice on how to proceed. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com Dapper Dan <dapperdan@home.com> wrote: > I would like to run a diagnostic tool to test the condition of the > harddrive on our 6-7 year old Compaq laptop. Guest Dapper Dan Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Harddrive diagnostic tool Thanks David and Mike, I appreciate the feedback. I have no idea if mine is an 8E, 10E or C4K, Mike. How can I find out? I ran the Drive Fitness Test. Don't like the results! It quotes a Failure Code: 0x73- Defective Device. Excessive shock. Technical result code: 731019E0 If you recall, I just recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows Me. I also did a surface scan in dos mode right after that and it didn't report any errors. I'll do another scan and see if it reports anything abnormal. Is there something else I should be doing? How can I find out? Seems as though direct Hitachi contact is your only salvation. BTW you are not the only one with this problem and the answers are somewhat conflicting. You may want to see for yourself. > > I ran the Drive Fitness Test. Don't like the results! > It quotes a Failure Code: 0x73- Defective Device. Guest Dapper Dan Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Harddrive diagnostic tool Thanks. I have a message into them but am not overly optimistic given this drive is probably 4 years old. For all I know, it might even have been installed that way, given I ran another scan and it too reports no errors on the drive. Guest Dapper Dan Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Harddrive diagnostic tool Just as an update, Hitachi advise that the result code indicated from DFT would certainly indicate that the drive is failing imminently. It was highly suggested that I backup anything of importance because it is no longer reliable. Good thing no personal files are involved since I was hoping to play with it as an educational tool!
