Guest dirk2112 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I have 45 basic volumes (logical drives with extended partitions and no drive letters) that are pointing to an EMC Clarion 700. Over the weekend some folks decided to install some hotfix/patches to my server. After the reboot, the system (disk manager) now only sees 10 of the 45 disks. I am at a loss as to how to find out what happened. Some folks think it is a permission problem related to security, but I don't even know where to look. Any help is appreciated! Mike
Guest NeilH Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Basic volumes disappear after Hotfix updates and reboot Why not ask the folks who did the hotfix/patching? It is their responsibility to ensure that what they do is working correctly and not causing any problems. Why must you clear up THERE mess!! Did they do the update with your permission?, if not then hire someone to fix the problem and charge the relevant people. Maybe next time they will think before upsetting a system!! Sorry for not answering your question directly, but there are far too many people who don't know what they are doing but are still allowed to mess systems up and get away with it. Secondly, actually "seeing" disks in disk management has nothing to do with NTFS security, as NTFS security is on Volume level, not on Device level - Start with rolling back the patches they have loaded - if you are using EMC PowerPath, run "powermt display dev=all" on the command prompt, and see if PowerPath is seeing all the devices. rgds, Edwin. Guest dirk2112 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Basic volumes disappear after Hotfix updates and reboot You're both right regarding others jackin with my stuff...problem is due to politics I have to fix their mistakes...it sucks trust me...I know! Anywy, I ran the "powermt" statement and it looks like it returned information on all 45 luns..although I'm not sure what the information really means, but it looks like it can see the devices. I'm not really an OS expert...is there an easy way to roll-back the hotfix/patches that were applied? Thanks very much for the help! dirk "Edwin vMierlo [MVP]" wrote: > First of all, I fully agree with NeilH !!! > > Secondly, actually "seeing" disks in disk management has nothing to do with > NTFS security, as NTFS security is on Volume level, not on Device level > > - Start with rolling back the patches they have loaded > - if you are using EMC PowerPath, run "powermt display dev=all" on the > command prompt, and see if PowerPath is seeing all the devices. > > rgds, > Edwin. > > > > "NeilH" <neil@nospam.uk> wrote in message > news:uURjo10YIHA.3400@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > > Why not ask the folks who did the hotfix/patching? > > It is their responsibility to ensure that what they do is working > correctly > > and not causing any problems. Guest dirk2112 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Re: Basic volumes disappear after Hotfix updates and reboot I spoke to EMC and looks like the "powermt" results I got only listed paths that were there and not actually all the disks that were good. How do I make sure security and/or permissions are correct so that powerpath can see the luns? dirk "dirk2112" wrote: > You're both right regarding others jackin with my stuff...problem is due to > politics I have to fix their mistakes...it sucks trust me...I know! > > Anywy, I ran the "powermt" statement and it looks like it returned > information on all 45 luns..although I'm not sure what the information really > means, but it looks like it can see the devices. > > I'm not really an OS expert...is there an easy way to roll-back the > hotfix/patches that were applied? > > Thanks very much for the help! > dirk > > "Edwin vMierlo [MVP]" wrote: > > > First of all, I fully agree with NeilH !!! > > > > Secondly, actually "seeing" disks in disk management has nothing to do with > > NTFS security, as NTFS security is on Volume level, not on Device level > > > > - Start with rolling back the patches they have loaded > > - if you are using EMC PowerPath, run "powermt display dev=all" on the > > command prompt, and see if PowerPath is seeing all the devices. > > > > rgds, > > Edwin. > > > > > > > > "NeilH" <neil@nospam.uk> wrote in message > > news:uURjo10YIHA.3400@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > > > Why not ask the folks who did the hotfix/patching? > > > It is their responsibility to ensure that what they do is working > > correctly > > > and not causing any problems. Guest Edwin vMierlo [MVP] Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Re: Basic volumes disappear after Hotfix updates and reboot Continue to work with EMC ! That is why you have support contracts ! - if the "powermt display dev=all" command shows all the disks then your storage and storage connectivity is OK next: - is this a cluster ? (because clusdisk.sys could *hide* disks from disk management) "dirk2112" <dirk2112@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8D67ACC4-0EE5-417F-9FA6-AF0315AF2EBE@microsoft.com... > I spoke to EMC and looks like the "powermt" results I got only listed paths > that were there and not actually all the disks that were good.
