Gooday, I'm just completed constructing a new computer (with help from yourselves) and have loaded Vista premium 64bit. I have been using a REDTEN router connected to my previous XP Desktop with wifes laptop wirelessly connected. This has been sucessfull. The New Desktop has been connected via ethernet and sees the router as an unidentified network, but doesn't allow internet access (big red cross). I've tried all usual routes to get round this and am wondering if the 64bit was a step too far. Redten appears to be defunct so there is no support from them.

any ideas?:(

Justsome more thoughts, the laptop-wireless access to internet via router still works. I cannot get to the IP address of the router, ie 192.168.1.1/ using IE

Hi John,

Your Vista computer may have a problem obtaining an IP address from the redten router. Vista is known to have this issue with certain routers.

Normally you would have to edit the registry to fix this, but you can also use this fix tool:

Vista DHCP and Router Problems... Free Fix Tool

Download, extract, and run. Follow the instructions on the site:

1. Click on "Query Adapter" to get the list of network adapters in your system

2. Select the adapter you wish to fix. Reboot your system and see if you can get an IP from DHCP.

3. If you wish to undo the fix, select the adapter and choose "Reset to Vista Default".

failure

Hi Snow, Tried your suggestion, no go I'm afraid. Is it likely to be any better using a wireless dongle instead of the ethernet link? My Vista laptop works wirlessly, or is the 64bit a factor. Presumably a new router quoted as being suitable for use with Vista64 would work.

Should have stuck with XP

Many thanks for your help, away on hols for a week will pick up again when back

further work

Hi There, back from hols now and trying to pick up where I left off.

I tried my laptop ethernet link this morning, and after some work in the windows network setup area it worked OK. This is a 32bit basic Vista, the problem unit is 64bit home premium.

I also downloaded on this XP machine, and and then copied and installed updated LAN drivers on the desktop, but still no go. I'm borrowing another router this weekend to try, but I'm beginning to wonder if the mobo's LAN system is U/S. I guess going wireless with this unit is a way to go, and use the laptop for any router setups.

The MOBO (ASRock 4core1600-glan) has a WiFi/E header but requires it's own adaptor, which seems to be difficult to find. Is it better to get an internal card or a USB one, It does seem crazy using wireless to cover a 12" distance.

Any ideas anyone?

Success! sort of

Hi there. I've at last been able to get onto the internet via the Ethernet cable and Router. I found the way to manually set the IP address and succeeded in getting rid of the Red cross, even though there was a warning that I'd nominated the same IP ad as another computer (presumably my Laptop).

I then switched back to auto- IP address, and a better one was found automatically that resolved the clash.

However the connection speed seems to be even slower than normal.

Many thanks for your help Snow

not yet fully OK

Hi There, I'm now up and running with access to internet, and am starting to install software.

The network is still not perfect.

1. A small point and not sure whether it's important. Ive named the network SSID in the router. My laptop (working wirelessly) picks up this SSID name in the network and sharing centre, in both the graphic and the connection detail. This unit, the new desktop, names it "network" in the graphics and Local Area connection in the connection detail.

2. I have a Canon wireless printer which used to connect to the previous desktop wirelessly via the router. It refuses to do so to the new one. It still works wirelessly with the laptop.

The Canon setup system says it cannot find the printer, and when I use the canon network utility it says there is no port installed, and then refuses to let me install one.

I've found and installed Canon updates from their website.

The laptop can see and use the printer wirelessly, and is in the network map as an associated unit at the bottom of the window with a 12 digit reference number, if I double click on it it opens with printer and memory slot icons

The desktop network shows the laptop, and the same 12digit number reference as 2 icons but this when clicked on shows a network error box saying "windows cannot access (12 digit number) 8527E88527E9 and an error code 0x80070035

when diagnosed it comes up with "not a valid host name"

Hi again John,

If i understand right then you are currently using:

Laptop (Vista 32bit) Wireless

PC (Vista 64bit) LAN cable

PC (XP) LAN cable

Printer Wireless

The only problem is the PC with Vista 64bit, that cannot see the shared printer.

Go into the network and sharing center by righ-clicking the network icon at the bottom-right, and selecting it.

Click 'manage network connections' on the left. You should see 'Local area connection' there. Right-click on it, and choose properties.

If "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is not ticked, then do so.

Un-check 'Internet protocol version 6'

Click OK, and try to access the share again. Make sure you disable any firewall software on the PC to make sure that isn't the problem.

Ok, some more things to check:

You should make sure all of your computers are in the same workgroup. You can find out the workgroup by Clicking Start, right-click on Computer. It will be listed there.

The default on Vista is 'WORKGROUP' which should normally be fine.

Now, open the network and sharing center, and look at the entry for 'Network'

Is it set to Private, or Public?

Click 'veiw status' beside it, and then click 'details'. Highlight everything in the box, and then paste it into your next reply.

Ok, I notice two things there:

Firstly, DHCP is disabled. I know you said the computer was having problems getting an IP address from the router, but if another Vista machine on the network can do this without problems, then yours should also be able to.

Try turning DHCP back on to see if you can get an IP from the router:

Right-click on the network Icon at the bottom-left of the screen, beside the clock, and choose 'Network and sharing centre'. Once the Network and sharing centre is open, look on the left-hand pane for a link that reads 'Manage network connections' and click it. Find the icon for 'Local area connection' if using a LAN cable. Right click on it, and select properties.

Find 'Internet protocol TCP/IP'. Select it, and then click the Properties button.

In this window you should see the options 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' Selected.

If both of those are selected, then everything is OK. If not, then change the selection to them, and then disconnect and re-connect to the network.

Secondly, you appear to have a null MAC address of all 0's. This could point a driver problem, or even a faulty network card. I think you should try a different NIC in the computer to see if these problems go away. If your old computer isn't using an onboard card, then you could take it out and put it in the new computer to check.

Hi Snow, Tried first point, both were set to a specified IP ad so, set them back to auto set. It then showed a unknown connection as it did before. I tried the network card from my XP machine, (before I removed it I downloaded an update zip file). When installing in the new machine it didn't like the original CDbased drivers and the update package informed me that it doesn't support Vista!

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner;

Windows should have drivers to work with most network adapters. Try uninstalling the ones on the CD, and then booting the computer up with the ethernet card plugged in.

It should automatically install it. In the event that it doesn't, you will have to get a different adapter that can work with windows Vista.

Finally sorted

Hi all, I think I'm finally sorted on this problem. I had already tried the default Windows drivers on the "old" card so ordered a new "vista" one and downloaded some 64bit updated drivers.

I also had a brain storming session with my son in law at the weekend doing such things as "ping" commands etc. He left with the opinion that it was the router and not the card, but when he left the problem with both slightly flacky internet access and no wireless printer connectivity remained. After he left I couldn't even get to talk with the router, so installed the new ethernet card, still no network

This morning I tried resetting up the Router using the laptop, noteing all steps and any detail, then switched to the desktop, instant success. I then tried the installing the printer, but for some reason when connecting the USB cable for setting up the wireless link, used a rear USB socket instead of a front one, success immediately. Now faced with the minor problem of limited front usb functions.

Many thanks to all who contributed

Good to hear John.

I might guess that the front usb ports don't have a power supply or limited supply.

It might also be that the controllers for them are corrupted. You might want to look in device manager and uninstall the controllers. After a reboot they should be reinstalled. It won't hurt anything.
