DAIPWYSO Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Hiya, newbe here. Don't know if i'm posting in the right place? I use a Dell dimension 2400 with 1gb RAM, 80gb HDD, running XP with SP3. Everything we had was on it. HDD was quite full. So we got an emachines laptop with 2gb RAM, 250gb HDD running Vista homebasic for my partner to use, mainly for pictures and music files (itunes to go with the 80gb Ipod classic). We also have a 1TB toshiba external hard drive. She has loaded all of her pictures (10gb), music (23gb) plus other data onto the laptop. The problem is that the laptop C drive shows a total used of 90gb but when we add up the total of data, systems, applications etc., there is 27gb we can't account for.I have a suspicion that Itunes may have duplicated the music files (but it is only a shot in the dark) How do we find / reveal all of the data files? Many thanks in anticipation Dave:confused: Quote
snow Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 The used disk space is probably due to volume shadow copy / system restore. In windows Vista, system restore also has the 'previous versions' feature which makes backups of your folders. This is done by the volume shadow copy service, and is part of normal operation. You can turn off system restore and delete your existing restore points to regain the used space, but this could limit your options should something go wrong in future. DAIPWYSO Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Thanks for the prompt and reassuring reply Snow. We can relax about 'losing' our disk space. Dave Quote
britnko Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Seems like you have turned system restore on so every time you boot in gets your previous files and data. Quote
DAIPWYSO Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 Hi all thanks for your help so far. Can you advise a 'simple'and safe way to resolve this issue. Some weeks have passed but not much data has been added, the HDD in now 60% full (of 250G)!! At this rate it could be full by Christmas. Many thanks in anticipation, Dave Quote
DAIPWYSO Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Just an update. Jelly Bean resolved this issue for me in the 'change from vista' thread. Thanks Dave Quote
