When I open windows Explorer (I don't have "my computer", didn't like the stupid name), the file/directory tree open current user and Documents. I then have to close these or scroll down a couple of screens to get to a lower branch.

All i want open is "computer" branch. I guess there is something in the registry that needs editing but I can't find it.

Hi Triode:

I'm not sure which version of Windows you are talking about but as maynardvdm has said if you do it via that method you will likely get the expanded tree view starting with the Start Menu opened. This has been a basic function for quite some time.

If you open My Computer or Computer as it is called in Vista via the method HobGoblin suggested you will get the non-expanded tree view. Opening Computer or My Computer via any method will do the same.

You do have the My Computer option via an icon shortcut or applet or various other means that will open it in the view you want. I think you just deleted such or chose not to show it on your desktop. Are you aware that you can put it back on your desktop and rename it?

As of now I have not found a way to not open Explorer in a non-expanded tree view in the left pane or navigation pane as it is called in Vista. I'm sure there is a way via reg edit but other options would be better.

When Windows 7 is released I believe there is a simple way to do this however.

Vista Home Premium.

I don't have a "my computer" or "computer icon.

I've a clear desktop with no icons whatsoever and no quick launch bar. I don't like this modern windows ****. I'm happier with a DOS prompt.

I've gone back to the "classic" menu and screen style and only have a start menu link to "c:\windows\explorer.exe"

I want explorer to open with a closed tree as "my computer" does.

There must be something in the registry to tell it how to open but I can't find it.

I think areo is a nice improvement over luna (XP's default theme), and is worth trying out. Having an instantly accessible run/search box in the start menu should appeal to those who prefere to type out the program they want to run (eg DOS users).

This is still a shortcut file, exactly the same as one you would find on your desktop.

Searching google for the problem revealed this:

By default, Windows Explorer opens showing the My Documents folder. To change the default setting so that all top–level drives and folders are shown, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, then right–click Windows Explorer, and click Properties.
  2. Under Target field, which reads %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe, add to make the line read %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, C:\
  3. Click OK.

That should make explorer open with all drives visible; I just tested it and it worked for me.
