scobe Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I have managed to copy most of my user account settings. see: http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-2000-and-xp/8093-lost-user-settings.html But I have additional problems: Before I started this process I had 69% of my computers space available. After copying files to my new user account, this has plummeted to 48% I want to recover some space. How can I do this? When creating a new account I created a password. During this process I was asked if I wanted to make my documents & files private, too which I foolishly said yes. I now want to change this. How can I change back so my documents & files are not private? Lastly, when I open "my pictures" & view a picture. Dell Image standard version automatically opens (Crap). What else can I use? I would really appreciate your help again! scobe Quote

RandyL Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Hi scobe; I'll attempt to answer your last question. scobe Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 Hi Randy I followed the instructions in your link, But when I get to the part where you click "open with" to change how files are viewed, all I get is "open" so I have no option to change. Any other ideas? scobe Quote
RandyL Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Is it just the Open With that is missing from the context menu? If so look at line 220 on the left at Kellys-Korner. Also there is this from Microsoft. "Open With" Command Missing from the Context Menu As always before modifying the registry you should back-up the registry first. Try this too. Right click a picture file and click Properties. Do you see an option to chaange it there? Quote We are all members helping other members. snow Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Hi Scobe, The extra space taken up is probably due to duplicate files created when you copied you account. If you go to Control Panel > User Accounts you should see a list of the accounts on your computer. You can delete your old accounts now that you have copied the settings accross, but make sure there aren't any documents or pictures etc that still need to be retreived before you do it. Use the delet account option in that window. You can also download ccleaner from here: Download CCleaner 2.23.999 - FileHippo.com Note: don't use the registry option, just the 'Cleaner' part. This should get rid of any temporary files left over from before. Now for the other question: if you made your files and folders private then you will have to take ownership of the files and folders back in order to undo the privacy action. You need to access the 'Security' tab in the Properties window of the account folder to do this. Do the following (taken from another forum): Since you're running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.
