RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Hi,

I have windows 64bit terminal server and vista rdp clients.

Frequently RDP sessions are freezing, can anyone guide me how to troubleshoot.

I don't have any error messages, all it happens is RDP freezes and I need to

reset the accounts in Terminal Server Manager.

Regards.

Re: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Do all clients freeze simultaneously? Or only some of them?

When this happens, is the console session still behaving normally?

How often does this happen? At what time of the day? Is there any

pattern, like when many user logon in the morning? Any correlation

with print jobs?

Re: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Dear Vera,

Following are my findings.

Only some of the clients freeze.

Console session is working normal, all we do is reset the TS Account for that

RDP client.

Everyday atleast 3 to 4 clients freezes at different timings during the day.

Print jobs - I am not very sure.

I am aware, with the above vague description we may not be able to

troubleshoot further, but still I seek your help.

Regards,

Re: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Dear Vera,

Further to my earlier post, few more inputs.

>> Do all clients freeze simultaneously? Or only some of them ?

only some of them. 3 or 4 at a time.

>> When this happens, is the console session still behaving normally ?

We cannot even minimize the RDP. The user gets stuck on the screen and cannot

use the computer and when he closes and reopens RDP session, it opens the

same session that was hung up.

>> How often does this happen ?

at least every other day.

>> At what time of the day ?

During working hours 8AM to 5PM when the users are working with the

Application.

>> Is there any pattern ?

No

>> Any correlation with print jobs ?

No

Regards.

Re: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

OK, so the server itself doesn't become totally unresponsive, since

some sessions and the console session continue to work OK.

Regarding the sessions that do freeze, does it happen during

logging on and starting the session, or does it happen while they

have been connected and working for a longer period?

If you don't reset a frozen session, does it eventually become

responsive again, or not?

I'm not sure at all if this helps, but I would check these

articles:

931656 - FIX: You cannot use the Remote Desktop Connection feature

or the Remote Desktop MMC to connect to a remote Windows Server

2003-based server

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=931656

947773 - A Windows Server 2003-based computer responds slowly to

RDP connections or to SMB connections that are made from a Windows

Vista-based computer

Dear Vera,

The following is the feedback.

Logging and starting the session - NO FREEZE applications works fine. Yes, it

HAPPENS when the user is connected and working for a longer period.

> If you don't reset a frozen session, does it eventually become responsive again, or not?

Yes, without reset the session is responsive after a while. Today we observed

it and found the response time was around 11 minutes for the user to continue

his session exactly where he was before during the frozen period.

Regards.

Re: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Mm, I'm not sure what causes this.

Have you tried workaround 1 (and possibly 2) from KB article

947773?

If that doesn't help, and there's nothing in the EventLog, I'd call

MS Support.

RE: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Hello I am having the exact problem. Any solutions or work around. One thing

I did realize that when the session freezes if you right click and send a

message to the user their session becomes active again. Let me know.

Thanks

RE: RDP Freeze - troubleshooting steps

Hello Renovati,

I traced my RDP freeze problem to some extent. After close observation of my

users navigation and usage pattern, when our users open to view any Acrobat

PDF files from within my RDP Published application, RDP was freezing.

We had in ourTerminal Server - Acrobat 7.0 Standard version with auotmatic

updates enabled. Now, we installed Acrobat 8.1.1 professional with automatic

updates DISABLED. Almost 90% of the freezing problems reduced, still there

is 10 % of freezing happening now and then stopped.

Regards.

Rdp unresponsive/freeze

For a day, the server in remote is not responding when trying to connect to it. Its like, when I click on connect, it starts but within seconds, the rdp exits and only the rdp default dialog box exists. This is about to happen for few minutes and after sometime I can take the rdp. Could u pls help on this?
