Hi.

I'm guessing this is a monitor issue but it could be something else.

My monitor keeps going purple so I thought it was on its way out. So today I decided to buy a new one; it's a Samsung P2050 20" widescreen.

However, I'm having problems with this too; every few minutes or so it goes black, then to some test card type screen and then turns itself off. but it isn't completely off as the red light is still on and the menu buttons work but there is nothing on screen. I have to switch it off at the wall and back on to get it working again.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Could it be my graphics card?

Cheers.

Hi PCUser, it sounds like a setting wrong, check that the refresh rate is at 60HZ and not higher.

Right click an open area of the screen, then Properties, settings, advanced, then finally "Monitor" to find out.

Is the graphics on board or a separate graphics card? if separate remove the card and try the original on board graphics to rule out the card.

Hi I've checked the refresh rate and it's already on 60hz. It's going through my graphics card and unfortunately I don't have an onboard option.

I've tried using both the vga and the dvi connection but the problem remains the same.

Hi again, looks like we are still at the point of not being sure about either the monitor or the graphics card.

However considering that the monitor is new we will go for the card, it is possible that it is putting out too high a voltage, most flat screen monitors will shut down if that is the case.

Can you borrow another card off a friend? that would at least prove it without having to invest in a new one if we find out there is a problem with the monitor.

A new card being expensive and unlikely to be accepted back after use, is not good, as if it is the monitor at fault, you can at least return that under warranty.

You are most likely correct that it's the card at fault and not the monitor but I'm unable to obtain a test card in the short term.

Here's what I've decided to do: seeing as I bought the monitor today I'll take it back tomorrow and ask for an exchange. If another new monitor does the same thing then we'll know it's likely to be the card and it'll give me more time to source another which I can test.

In hindsight I think it's more likely the card seeing as my current crt monitor keeps going purple (or less green).

Thanks for your help. I'll keep you posted.

OK thanks for letting us know. It is difficult to determine which is the problem at this stage and going your way will at least give us a clue. Do let us know how you get on.

Hi. It's been a week. I exchanged the monitor but it still wasn't 100% (kept flickering). I bought a cheap nvidia 7600GS and every thing's running OK so far.

It'll do until I build a new system.

thanks.

Thanks for the update, and we know now it was the card.

Best of luck.
