Guest Chris Coates Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I have an application installed on a Win 2003 server. The service has been running fine, but if the service stops, I have to reboot to get it started again. If I just try to restart the service I get a error 1073 "The specified service already exists" I know it exists, I installed it and have been using it. I am not trying to re-install the app, just restart the service. I have looked on line but everything I have found involves installing or re-installing a service, which I am not doing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chris
Guest Steve Goddard Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 RE: Unable to start service on Win 2003 Does the process stop/fail at the same time as the service? I would assume it doesn't shutdown cleanly and leaves the process or child process running. If the service is stopping randomly then report the bug the vendor, check for updates on the app and look through any forums the app has for resolutions. -- Steve G. What errors show up in the Event Logs? Sounds like the service may be in a "stopping" state. Check the services control panel. You could try PSKILL from Sysinternals. When this happens next time, try using the utility to kill the process. Use PSLIST to list the running services. Of course, this is only a workaround to avoid having to reboot the server. You still need to identify the reason for the problem.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services
