Hi,

I have a laptop hard drive which I need to recover files from, the laptop is broken so I bought a hard drive caddy so I can plug it into my PC via USB.

When I plug it in, it detects the hard drive fine, and it is in the list of devices, but it will not show up in My Computer, so I cannot access the files on it.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Will, welcome to FPCH

Try clicking Start > right click on Computer > Select 'Manage'

Under the 'Storage' heading click 'Disk managment'

Do you see the hard disk listed there?

I use USB hard drive adapters quite often. What I see sometimes is that the drive can be seen in My Computer, but it shows up as unformatted. When that happens, I switch to another adapter. For some reason, some adapters are just flakey.

Another possibility is the power. The hard drive need power to spin up and for the electronics to work. If this caddy doesn't have it's own power supply, meaning that it gets its power from the USB port only, you may have an issue if the USB port can't provide the amount of power required for the caddy.

Goto

Start > Control panel > admin tools > disk management

If it is not seen in there then it is not connected to the caddy properly
