Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to solve my problem. i bought a new desktop today from PC world, when I got home and set it up the monitor comes on very briefy and then a message pops up saying its going to sleep and it turns itself back off and I can't get it on. I managed to set up the computer using an old monitor (of the pc I am using now).

I know that the computer is speaking to the monitor as when I turn the monitor on and off it very briefly shows me the screen and I can see that it has loaded windows etc I have tried everything that it states on the HP support site but to no avail, and I can't seem to even access the menu by pressing the button on the front of the monitor.

Do you think I have been sold faulty goods? or is this something simple that someone with much more know how than me is going to know how to fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated ... but please remember I am not pc savvy so an idiots guide would be good!

Thanks :(

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

I am afraid I can only offer the simple answer of, checking the monitor connection cable is fully plugged in to both the monitor and the PC.

As you say another older monitor works fine, then it would seem that there is a problem with the new monitor and suggest taking it back in the morning. Take the PC with you as well so they can set it up to prove it one way or the other.

At this stage to go any further than checking the connections could remove your claim on warranty.

If there is any hassle from PC World of any sort, quote the sale of goods act at them.

Also Take the receipt with you as well, they probably won't help at all without that.

Nev.

I had this problem too:

I was already using another monitor with my PC, which has a DVI connection. Before I plugged in the hp monitor, I should have gone into the BIOS & switched over to the onboard graphics to use the vga connector, which is what the hp monitor uses. So my PC was expecting a connection from a DVI monitor.
