Guest rexracer_geno Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 I have a server with a very limited function. It servers as a standalone domain controller that services a SharePoint site. I want to backup AD in a minimal fashion, to be able to restore only the DC information on a new DC in the event of disaster. When I view the selections under system state, all the sub-selections are greyed out. Is this normal? I go ahead and do the System State backup with detailed log and it does list Active Directory as an object, but there is no confirmation in the log that AD was backed up. Also, if I go to Restore and select the system state backup, it shows a very old date for Active Directory. I find this odd - according to the documention, I have done everything necessary for an AD backup. Questions: 1) is my AD being backed up? 2) why can't I select AD from the backup selection menu?

YES, you take system or nothing, no way to choose. > I go ahead and do the System State backup with detailed log and it > does list Active Directory as an object, but there is no confirmation > in the log that AD was backed up. > > Also, if I go to Restore and select the system state backup, it shows > a very old date for Active Directory. If you backup the system state from a domain controller it includes also the AD database, which includes anything you need for restoring a domain controller > 2) why can't I select AD from the backup selection menu? Not foreseen, because: see Question1 and have alook here: http://207.46.196.114/windowsserver/en/library/fd8db289-d1ed-4662-a86c-1d9b466da0791033.mspx?mfr=true

Guest Meinolf Weber Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Re: Backup Active Directory Hello rexracer_geno, No, but it is really needed, also for the "how to do it", that you test it BEFORE having the need for it.
