Heya again guys! I hope everything is doing okay on this site. =]

I've returned to tackle a problem I've been ignoring for MONTHS.

If you remember, or look through my posts, a while ago the members of this site helped me Partition Ubuntu onto my computer. But personally, I find it hard to use an Operating System if it doesn't have a connection to the Internet.

I have a Belkin 802.11g Wireless G USB Network Adapter, and I remember installing ndisgtk so that Ubuntu could work with the Windows Drivers! I found the correct .inf file, and installed it. HOWEVER, it still didn't work. =[

Do you think you could help me out?

Don't know the exact model you have, but have you tried ndiswrapper?

SourceForge.net: ndiswrapper

I used it for a while, it can be a pain to set up - like all Windows to Linux mods.

Another thought, what distro are you using - is it as per you sig, Ubuntu 8.04?

The latest 9.04 is far superior with networking and component support, it might be worth upgrading and buying a second hand PCI wireless card that is supported.

It will make you life sooooo much easier :)

Whoopsie! I was checking my Partitions to find out the version of Ubuntu (it didn't tell me) and I had "ndisgtk" copied. I MEANT to say ndiswrapper. Either way, it didn't work. =[

I was told that newer versions work better with this type of problem.

HOWEVER, what steps should I take to update if I can't actually access the Internet through Ububtu? The guide on their site didn't quite mention that problem.

And yes, I currently have Ubuntu 8.04.

Hi,

Could you use an ethernet cable temporarily to update Ubuntu? That would save any hassle dealing with wireless drivers.

Failing that, I found this discussion dealing with your adapter:

A bizarre wireless nightmare ubuntu 64 7.10, Belkin 802.11G USB - Ubuntu Forums

It seems that once you've identified the chipset used by the adapter model you have (ralink, zydas etc) you can find drivers for Ubuntu that will support it. I don't know how difficult this will be to do though.
