Hi everyone. i'm new here and going to ba asking for some up to date advice. I have built basic systems in the distant past and only gave up around 10 years ago because the off the shelf boxes were so affordable.

Things have changed with the current financial situation and I find that i'm going to have to start meddling inside the boxes I have to extend their useful life rather than buy new.

And I find things have changed so much! My first 'computer' was a Spectrum 16k, first PC an IBM PCXT. Even when I was building stuff we talked in Mb of RAM, now it's Gb. A large hard drive was 800Mb, now we are into Tb!

So for anyone reading this and thinking 'Poor old sod'...... You're right :)

Thanks, JB. My first PC had a FIVE Mb hard drive and one Mb of what was then called 'extended memory' i.e. more than the standard 640Kb that IBM would be plenty for everyone!
