I’ve just got wireless broadband. My PC detects the network. When I try to connect to the wireless network I enter the WAP key when prompted, but then nothing happens and the red cross remains on the wireless icon in the taskbar.

I’ve also tried ethernet cable and the ‘limited or no connectivity’ warning appears and I can’t connect to the internet.

I’ve double and triple checked the WAP key and, in any case, I’ve tried with another wireless PC and it works fine wirelessly with the router.

I’ve also uninstalled my antivirus software as it was out of date and I wondered if it was stopping the internet connection. Still can’t connect. Please can someone help?

Hi Blackjack,

First of all let's troubleshoot the ethernet cable connection, as it is simpler than dealing with wireless. Connect it up to the router and wait for the 'Limited or no connectivity' message. Then do the following:

Open the command prompt by holding down the windows key, and pressing 'R'.

Into the run box that appears, type cmd and press enter.

Type ipconfig /all into the black command prompt window, and then press enter. The details for your computer's network adapters will come up.

Copy all of this output by right-clicking on the window, and choosing 'Select all', and then paste it into your reply.

another suggestion - when you get the command prompt, type in "netsh winsock " without the quotes and hit the ENTER key.

I have sorted it. I read another thread that mentioned 'Diagnose Connections Problems' in the Tools tab of Internet Explorer, so I tried it and that got the ethernet connection going.

Still my wireless wouldn't work after running the same tool again for the wireless connection.

After much time I came accross the data encription method in wireless network properties and changed it to TKIP (whatever that is!) and now my wireless is working as well.

No mention of data encription options anywhere in the router setup, so hopefully someone else will benefit from this thread.

Come on Plusnet, mention data encription in your trouble shooting guide.

Thanks for your responses Snow and Kelly.

No problem, glad to hear you got it fixed.

TKIP and AES are the two types of encryption you can use with WPA. AES is better, but not all devices support it.
