Hi all,

I currently have my friends computer at my house for me to "look at" due to a recent problem she has had with viruses etc.

Between us we have completely Re-installed Windows Xp Home with the original disc and installed the sounds drivers etc from the motherboard disc but the pc has since had no sound whatsoever. Ive searched around the forum and it appears to be a very common problem when re-installing xp.

The computer is a HIGH GRADE mmd05ss10 or at least thats the only label i can find, the motherboard is a FOXCONN 6514MR-ES, there is no sound card installed so i can only assume its built in on the motherboard??

Before all her problems with viruses etc there was perfect working sound, nothing new has been installed or uninstalled, the pc speakers we are trying it with work fine with my own pc ruling out the possibility of faulty speakers.

In control panel it shows "no audio device"

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi, you are right, there quite often is a problem getting sound back after a reinstall.

This is often down to not having the correct drivers, however you say you have the motherboard driver disk, did it install everything correctly? have you tried the disk again?

If still no good, can you tell us what information there is on that driver disk as that may be of help to find a source of on line driver download, along with your motherboard number (which you have told us, thanks).

Edited to add, I have just found this site have a look at the drivers here-

Foxconn 6514MR-ES drivers - page 2

Hi Nev, thanks for your reply,

yes we do have the Foxconn motherboard installation disc and installed everything on it, it said all was installed ok and we have tried to re-install from the disc but no joy.

I downloaded the drivers from the link you gave and installed them, still no joy.

When i look under control panel/ sounds & audio devices it still shows "NO AUDIO DEVICE" and yet in the add/remove programs it lists Realtek AC'97 AUDIO as being installed???

Is there maybe a possibilty that im trying to install the wrong drivers as browsing through the forum there appears to be more than one type of AC'97 AUDIO or could there maybe be something blatant somewhere else that were missing??

Hi again, two things, which you may have found elsewhere on the forum any way, but have you yet installed the Windows service packs? especially service pack 3, if not don't, if you have, uninstall it, and roll it back to service pack 2.

next is go back into add/remove and uninstall the AC97. Then go back to the site I gave and try a reinstall, see if that works.

Let us know how you get on.

Try going to RUN and type in "services.msc " without the quotes and hit the ENTER key. Check Windows Audio. It should be running. If it isn't, enable it and restart.

Hi Nev, its not on service pack 3 and ive already tried uninstal/ re-install a couple of times but still no joy.

Im wondering whether it may be best to go out and buy a pci sound card to cure the problem??

Hi again you could try that rout and with a decent card get much better sound quality, but seems a shame that at present we can't get the existing AC97 to work first.

There is something buzzing round my head and concerns what is known as firmware, but not sure where to obtain that or even if it is needed at the moment.

Hang on till one of our other guys comes on line with perhaps other suggestions.

Hi again I hadn't seen Kelly's post earlier that is worth looking at to see what you find there.

Just on the off chance your machine is running with an older chipset, try the driver download from here, if Kelly's information produces nothing.

Analog Devices Realtek AC97 Audio for VIA ® Audio... Driver Download

Just tried that too nev but still getting nowhere!

If i right click on my computer and go into manage then device manager it only shows audio codecs & legacy audio drivers no actual sound device under sounds, video & game controllers so it must have the right drivers just doesnt know a device is there for some reason??

Hello Hypnosis. Please do the following; it will give us significantly more information to work with. :)

  • Go here to download the latest version of System Spec
  • Download the executable version of the program and save it to your desktop.
  • Open the utility and you will see a list of your system specifications.
  • Click on the Edit toolbar and select Copy to Clipboard Ctrl + C.
  • Press Ctrl + V to post the specifications in your next reply.

Please post the required information as soon as possible. Thank you.
