File permissions, ownership changes and disappearing files

We have an issue that has been plaguing us for a little while now.

For some reason without any rhyme or reason, after a person uses a file it

spontaneously changes permission and ownership. If you view the file info in

Explorer it shows the owner as blank. Once you gain ownership and view the

security rights it shows the name of the last user that accessed it and

"System". This happens on many different folders, files and file types and to

many different users.

We have also been having an issue where files have been disappearing right

after users save them.

The file server is 2003 sp2.

Any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

RE: File permissions, ownership changes and disappearing files

Was there any patch installed on the FS?

Was there any application installed on the FS?

Files do not get changed like that, it's probably a piece of SW or patch

that is causing it, or maybe a virus.

RE: File permissions, ownership changes and disappearing files

Thanks for the reply.

The only software on this machine is the following;

Dell Openmanage

SQL desktop engine

Symantec AV

Backupexec Remote Agent

IE 7

5 IE Security Updates

25 or so Server Updates and OS Security Updates.

I would have to agree that this is way outside normal behavior. We have had

this manifest itself in Word and Excel quite a bit recently where someone is

working in a file, it appears to close normally then the file disappears and

a temp file is in it's place with those aforementioned file ownership and

permissions present.

RE: File permissions, ownership changes and disappearing files

Looks like a virus behavior, how about scanning the disks?

Also, enable auditing for EVERYONE on the files and folders to find out who

is changing them.
