denso Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium Make and Model: Acer Laptop 4810T Basically my problem is this, my mouse pointer locks into position whenever I use the keyboard. For example if I hold down a key - my mouse pointer will freeze to the current position on screen for the entire time I am holding down this button, and for around 1 second after I release the button. Although this does not happen for the ctrl, shift, alt or fn buttons. At the same time when I press a key my mouse pointer will stop moving however my mouse clicks both work. Other functions of the touch-pad also work, for example, zoom, scroll and clicking using the touch-pad. What I wondered is if there is a way to fix this so that my mouse will not lock into position whenever I touch a key? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Does this only happen when the keyboard is being used or does the pointer freeze when a left or right mouse button is pressed as well? Can you go to "Start" then "Run", type in or copy and paste- devmgmt.msc And click OK or hit "Enter" scroll down the list to "Mice and other pointing devices", click + to expand, are there any red or yellow marks against anything? denso Posted October 15, 2009 Author Posted October 15, 2009 Thanks for the reply. I did all this, but when I looked under Mice and other pointing devices' there isn't a red or yellow mark beside the only device that appears 'Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad'. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 OK, while in device manager did you have a look at keyboard as well? It is an oddity that I have not seen before, I wonder if any one else has any answers. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Jelly Bean Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I am not sure if this is the issue. In control panel open mouse/keyboard. Now I am not sure but the options in there that have been chosen maybe the issue. Such as "Snap to","Hide Pointer While Typing" there maybe other options in there that may need adjusting. Try and look around and see if there is something else listed that would indicate mouse pointer being held while typing? Example:Hold mouse pointer while typing? Jelly Bean Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Ok simple answer when you are typing the mouse stops moving so you do not accidently move the mouse. It is automatic function in laptops. Start by opening the Control Panel and then double-clicking Mouse. If you see a Device Select tab, click it and enable Disable TouchPad when USB pointing device is present. No such option? On my Acer Aspire One, which runs Windows XP, I had to click the Device Settings tab, then the Settings button, and then pore through Synaptics' extensive touchpad options. I found what I needed in Sensitivity, PalmCheck: By moving the slider closer to Maximum, the touchpad becomes more resistant to accidental brushes while typing. http://images.pcworld.com/howto/graphics/155654-Mouse%20Properties%20180_original.jpgOn a Vista notebook, I found a Tapping tab in the Mouse Properties window. There, I enabled "Tap off when typing," which keeps the touchpad from recognizing taps while I'm typing. If your laptop doesn't have this option, look for something similar. Recently I reviewed the Samsung Q310 laptop and found a feature to love: a function-key toggle that turns the touchpad on and off. It doesn't get easier than that. Hey, laptop manufacturers: steal that feature! Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................

I moved the PalmCheck to minimum and it works brilliantly now! Thats really great :D Also! This Acer has a function-key toggle to turn the mouse on and off! So why this setting is in place I do not know! Again - thanks! Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Hi Denso, glad that is all it was and you are now OK, thanks for letting us know. I must admit, I had forgotten this function was there in laptops, mainly because I have the pad turned off and use an external mouse on my lappy, I can't get used to those pads at all. :D Quote Need help with your computer problems?
