Remote Desktop to Win2k3 SBS freezes/pauses when moving mouse

Recommended Posts

I have been connecting to 4 servers without fail for some time. In the past

2 weeks when I connect to a Windows 2003 SBS system the login is fine and

the windows are drawn fine. When I move the mouse or click something it

appears to freeze for about 5 seconds, then carries on with the operation

for about 10 more seconds then freezes again. It appears as though its

running on a 28.8kbps modem when using the mouse, but keyboard is fine.

But, If I use only the keyboard to navigate round the windows it never

freezes, but as soon as I move the most, it freezes again.

* The server is running fine, with no errors or current issues.

* If I open a webpage with an animated gif the refresh is fine (providing I

don't move the mouse)

* No peaks in task manger/processes when moving mouse.

This doesn't happen on all the servers I Remote Desktop to. I connect mainly

to this server via VPN over a ADSL link, which for about 2 months has been

fine (this has just started in the last few weeks). I have connected to the

server avoiding the VPN with the exact same results.

The ADSL link at this remote office is pretty terrible, but its never done

this before, and has worked fine in the past.

Has another experienced anything like this before? or know of a solution or

any ideas?

Thanks for you time and help.

Hi Paul:

It is not clear from your comments if the mouse works correctly from the

local console. That is, when sitting in front of the server and logged on

locally?

Do some Internet speed tests on that adsl. Make sure you are getting

the proper upload speed.

When you are physically at the server the mouse works fine? When you

are at that office and you remote in from a desktop it works fine? If

it works fine from a desktop when you are in their office that would

suggest there is nothing wrong with the serve but with the adsl.

Re: Remote Desktop to Win2k3 SBS freezes/pauses when moving mouse

Thanks guys.

The mouse and keyboard is fine on the actual server desktop.

Ok, after the last login I was trying even more things, and it appears that

the remote desktop is not freezing! It appears to be a refresh redraw issue

when using the mouse.

Like I mentioned an animated give is fine, but when I click the mouse button

on a button or tab, nothing happens, when I hit the keyboard the screen

updates and shows that what I click was actually clicked.

Is it possible its something like the server/RDP session is not detecting

any change in the screen (at the remote end) when the mouse is moved so that

its not sending an update to the local RDP session, and when a keyboard

press is sent the screen is updated.

Thanks

Try and isolate the issue by creating an RDP connection to the server from a

computer on the lan to see how it behaves.

Besides running the speed test on the adsl, make sure you are not

doing something crazy like trying to get 24 bit video over the rdp

session. I also hate having desktop backgounds when working remotely.
