Hi, I am a little confused by your use of the word "Modem", a modem is a data transfer device, originally used on telephones, then later to direct connect for dial up internet service, and in it's latest form is a device for connecting to broadband services.

However I think you mean a computer, in this case an older E Machines one.

If this computer will still boot up and run, then all your photo's and data can be transferred via a USB memory stick, I would think a 4GB version would be big enough to transfer entire folders of photographs at a time, unless the folder contains more than 4GB of photo's, and that would be a lot of photo's.

have a look here for the sort of thing I mean-

JDOD4GB-730 - 4GB, USB Flash Drive , USB Flash Drive from Crucial.com

You will also be able to get one quite easily from a local retailer and some of the bigger supermarkets sell them in their computer sections.

If you need any help with how to use one once you have it, don't be afraid to ask.

Just to add, I now just noticed that you have either no monitor screen or at least no cable to connect one, I am afraid you will need one to see where the photo files are, and also to keep tabs on progress of transferring those files.

The only other option is removing the hard drive from the old E Machine to connect to your laptop, a bit more complex, but I can explain how to do that with not to much messing.
