Properly licensing Office 2003

We have a Windows 2003 Server running TS and 10 thin-clients connect

to it. We have installed a new copy of Office 2003 (in install mode)

on the Terminal Server and plan to provide Word, Excel to the thin-

clients that login to the TS.

1. How do we properly license the MS Office for this -ie, how many &

purchase/part information.

2. Where are those licenses installed?

Thanks

RE: Properly licensing Office 2003

You'd need 10 Microsoft Office Licenses, and they are not installed anywhere.

You just need the volume license from a Value Added Reseller. The consumer

editions of Office 2007 can't even be installed on TS, as they require Volume

License Media, which is purchased as a separate SKU from the license.

Businesses should not purchase or use shrinkwrapped box software, as you get

charged for the box and get no volume discount.

Office is licensed per device which is used to run Office, whether

Office is installed locally or accessed in a TS session.

So with 10 thin clients running Office in a TS session, you need 10

Office licenses. You just buy them, you don't install them.

So, it sounds that Office 2003 will work regardless if they are

purchased?! I did some research, but did not see anything related to

it not working if they were not purchased.

Thanks

Re: Properly licensing Office 2003

You will be violating the EULA if you don't buy the proper amount

of licenses. That's going to be painful when you get audited.

Ok. This is actually for a customer of ours and they do not intend to

violate the EULA. I just found it odd that it would be this easy for a

company to do so so I thought I had incomplete implementation

information.

From my research, it looks like this has changed in Office 2007?

Thanks again.

Re: Properly licensing Office 2003

AFAIK, the only thing that's enforced with Office 2007 is that you

need Offices licenses obtained through the Microsoft Volume

Licensing Program. Retail (full packaged product) and original

equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses for products released in the

2007 release timeframe do not permit network use.

You still have to make sure yourself that you buy the correct

number of licenses.

Here's the documentation:
