david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 I have been having a problem with my pc. Running windows xp. But it wont load and keeps flashing bluye screen. The pc is a hp and i have a 'hp restore plus' disk and a hp operating system disk. The question is if i use the operating system disk to reinstall xp will it wipe my data? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Hello David. If you use a full install disk or recovery disk then all data would be lost. Could you connect the hard drive to another computer first and remove all your data? Restart the computer and repeatedly tap F8 then choose last know good config that worked or safe mode do either of these work for you? Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 is there any way to connect hard drive to laptop? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 You would have to buy a 3.5 inch external case or the convert cables to turn it into an external USB drive. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 I'll start my problem from start I was using my pc normally when it suddenly shut down. now when i try to boot it flashes a blue screen right after the windows loading screen and then shuts down. So i tried reinstalling windows xp but i then recieved another blue screen stating: stop: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xf77bfcad, 0xf73917e4, 0x00000000) setupdd.sys - address f77bfcad base at f7793000, date stamp 41107c8f please help Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Hello David. This error appears to point to faulty or incompatible RAM. If you recently added more RAM remove the stick you fitted see if that helps. If you have more than one RAM stick installed remove all but one then see if the PC will boot. Then remove that stick and place in another and see if the PC boots. Information here: "STOP 0x0000008e" error message during Windows XP setup Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 havent recently added any ram. the ram that is in cam with the pc and has been fine. it is a pair, is it ok to remove one? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Yes David remove one and reboot see if you can logon to the PC. Then shut down and test the other stick on its own and reboot see if you can logon. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 tried it. didnt work either time. kept recognising that i had changed the amount of ram so that would suggest to me that they are both fine. Quote
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 if i am to remove the hard drive and put it into a different desktop pc do i remove the hard drive from the new pc? and also will it not just have the same problem on the new pc? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 You can fit the hard drive as a slave drive. Do not remove the main drive from the computer. On the hard drive you need to fit as a slave set the little plastic jumper to slave drive if it is IDE.Sticker on top of the hard drive will show you how. If SATA just plug in the data cable and power supply and restart the computer. Please power off the computer and remove from power outlet before opening it up.Touch power supply for a few seconds then fit hard drive. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
david87654321 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 so if it is a infected file tht is the problem will it carry on to the pc i'm using to set up slave? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Make a folder on the PC and then transfer all the files to it. Do not open the folder untill you have scanned it with your AntiVirus as soon as you transfered them over. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Tootech Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 After your PC first shutdown you could have some corrupt system files, a chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console often sorts that out. So i tried reinstalling windows xp but i then recieved another blue screen stating: If you get these errors when installing Windows - thats a full install I'm referring to, but its probably the same with a Repair install, the RAM is often the cuplrit. I'd go along with JB's reference to a memory fault and recommend you do a Memtest to rule it out. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool Quote
david87654321 Posted October 23, 2009 Author Posted October 23, 2009 ran chkdsk and it told me that there were several things wrong but done nothin to fix them. ended up slaving hard drive then doing total restore. Thanks for your help, much appreciated Quote
Jelly Bean Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 That is a good find there David, thankyou for getting back to us. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
