I have a Dell Desktop 8400 Pentium 4 running Windows XP SP2.

I just bought and plugged in a Verbatim 1 MB Store'n'Go USB Drive (does not come with software) and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" came up offering to Install the software Automatically. I choose that option only to receive an error message telling me that that it "Cannot Install this hardware. The hardware was not installed because the Wizard cannot find the necessary software".

Also, when I checked devices in System directory it showed the Store'n'Go device with a yellow question mark and an Exclamation mark.

My older 512 MB USB Drive works fine but I can't seem to find a solution to this error message.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me in solving this problem.

have you tried it in different usb ports...may be a good idea to try it in anopther computer....

the usb drive may reqiure slightly more power to initalise properly, try it in a PC using the onboard usb ports.....

give them a try then post back..

Dear Danzil,

Yes, I tried it on other USB ports on my computer and the results are always the same.

I've tried it on other computers and there's no problem with the computers recognizing

the flash drive.

I tried googling the problem and found a site that said the solution is to go to device manager, expand the USB

Controller section, right click and uninstall all of the listed USB devices. Then reboot the system. The poster claims that XP will recognize that I have deleted the USB controolers and add the new hardware back to my system.

I'm reluctant to try this because I'm afraid that doing this will cause everything not to work. What do you think?

Hi. Windows should pick up the usb when you reboot after unistalling them and then windows will automatically install it again.

I tried uninstalling my USB ports in device manager and rebooting the computer. Unfortunately, that didn't help. The ports did not reinstall and I got an error message on each device that was plugged into the USB port. I then tired unplugging all the devices and rebooting the computer again. Same result. Finally after 4 hours of experimentation and having none of my USB devices working (wireless mouse & keyboard/ wireless remote, etc.), I used the restore function to get everything back to normal. Of course, the Verbatim store'n'Go USB Drive still does not work.

Looking forward to working with you to resolve the problem.

In the device manager is the usb ports listed and is there a red x or yellow ! next to it? If no usb is listed try to manually install it using add hardware in control panel. If it is listed right click on it and go to properties. What does it say there? Post back with your findings. Also when you removed the usb drivers make sure no usb device is attched. Hope you get it sorted.
