Guest RJK Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Hello, An old friend recently presented me with an "old" W98 based standalone PC ! :-) ...built 20th-May-2000 ! After a long fight, (Asus P5A? AMD K6/2-500), and it hanging on a black screen, (after bios post and the "Windows 98 screen" with the "scrolling/rotating" line at the bottom of it), I fought and uninstalled Norton Internet Security, which I suspected was causing the black screen hang, .....and indeed after removing Norton - it will boot up in Windows Normal GUI mode. So ! before things start going backwards I'd like to scanreg /backup ....and label it. Do I have to use the quotes "??? ??? ???" .....and is it possible that 98's scanreg.exe is mistakenly detecting the Maxtor Drive ovlerlay / as being a bad sector, or would that not happen ? In any event, I now have Spinrite 6 running. TIA regards, Richard

Distinguish between the two utilities SCANDISK tests (hard) drive) integrity, File Allocation Table etc. SCANREG verifies Registry (USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT) at reboot. SCANREG /RESTORE can also be used to load an earlier date's Registry (useful in the case of a harmful change you want to undo.) SCANREG.INI sets parameters for this utility, including how many old Registries to save on disk. (Default value = 5 by command MaxBackupCopies=5 but you can reset this for any number you like.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada)

The daily saved, backed up registrys are in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP and are named rb***.cab. You can rename to whatever you want - rbGOOD.cab, for example - but I don't recall if SCANREG /RESTORE will display a renamed file for selection. No big deal if not, just rename conventionally before restoring. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. Guest RJK Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Re: scanreg.exe switch syntax ? Thanks, ...as usual - me saying one thing and meaning another ! scandisk instead of scanreg, or t'other way around. My excuse - tiredness. After a very pleasant but, VERY slow "dig" around this particular W98se system box, and after some pretty thorough scans for malware that surprisingly all came up negative, and after uninstalling oldish Norton bloatware - and cleaning up after that, and other application software remains, Spinrite 6 dealt with a damaged location on the hard disk containing a "Voodoo 3000? 3dfx" graphics driver," and after reinstalling that driver, all is well. I "trial and errored" with the scandisk.exe command line syntax for the switch /backup="text string" ...it turned out. I can remember from ages ago, (MSDOS 2.1 onwards :-), wishing that MS wouldn't use so much punctuation in their external DOS command *.exe examples ! regards, Richard "Don Phillipson" <e925@SPAMBLOCK.ncf.ca> wrote in message news:O2V7CmraIHA.5900@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > "RJK" <notatospam@hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:uvWVn3oaIHA.1532@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > >> An old friend recently presented me with an "old" W98 based standalone PC > ! >> :-) ...built 20th-May-2000 ! >> . . . >> So ! before things start going backwards I'd like to scanreg /backup >> ...and label it.
