XP recovery

Hi

 

I want to wipe a hard drive on a desktop and reinstall windows XP Home .

I don't have the original XP disk so followed the instructions on the Microsoft website to create the 6 floppy boot disks.

When I inserted the disk into the Pc , it wouldn't boot from the disk (I changed the setting in the BIOS to floppy) but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi Colin,

 

The floppy boot disks are designed to be used with the XP install CD. They are to be used when the computer you wish to install windows on can't boot from the CD, but can still read it.

 

It should still boot from them though, so there must be some problem with either the disks themselves or the creation of them. Floppys can be easily damaged by dust, especially if they are used in a floppy drive that has been sitting empty for a long time.

 

You will need a Windows CD in order to install windows. You might be able to get replacement disks from your computer manufacturer. If you let us know what the make and model of the PC is, we could look for you to see if this would be possible.

A mate gave me an old Pc they don't use anymore as I'm doing a MCDST course and need to have a PC to practice partitioning disks which I'm not having much luck with .

It's a TIME Pc which from what I'm told are rubbish .

I made the floppies on another Pc a HP Pavillion as far as I know they created successfully.

I don't have a XP disk for the HP either so if you could point me in the right direction.

Easy to solve this one.

 

You need a windows xp disk,

 

Or the original recovery disk's Which came with time pc's

Basically, The monk is right. To go any further you need a full copy of Windows XP, or at least the proper recovery disk for each machine, any disk or floppy created from another machine will not work.

If you get in touch with HP they can supply a recovery disk for that machine, the Time machine, being so old, you may not have any luck with the manufacturers so a Full copy of XP may have to be bought.
