I now see that you had posted on the PB group but I had not looked at

that thread.

I don't know if you have tried to read a number of different CD's

as it's possible the problem is simply with your media.

Then of course, if your parts junk box is like my parts junk box...

the 2nd drive you put in the machine could be bad...

But...to see if the problem is with the harware itself

or with your operating system...

you could use a cd-support boot disk

and see if the cdrom reads in dos.

If it does...then the problem is with win98 and you should boot to safe

mode...

then go into "device manager" and delete all instances of cdrom...

then reboot and let windows reinstall.

If that does not do the trick...

Here is one add'l thing that I have had to do on a few

*rare *occasions:

If the cdrom works in DOS

but will not work in Windows and all else fails...

simply install the DOS cdrom drivers

| Thanks for the response philo, I went and bought a new LiteON and now it

| works so my spare junk pile is needing some repairs...now I need to find

| some drivers to make the cd write and dvd read portion to work. The supplied

| nero software is supposed to work on 98SE which I do not have.

Please fix your clock. You are posting from the future.

cd not reading in win98 1st edition

hello, I've been trying to get an old PB 910 to read the cd with no luck (

the PB group has been trying to help me solve this also). It is win 98 and

the cd flashes as power up starts and displays itself on the initial boot

screen. The cd is connected to its own 40 pin ribbon and is listed as

secondary master in the boot up window. The HD is on it own 40 pin ribbon as

well. In the bios the Primary and Secondary master are set to auto.

When in windows any cd inserted always results in cd not ready window

(abort, retry, fail). I have also put in a different cd (2004 toshiba) with

the same results. This MB also has usb ports (if this makes any difference?)

which work quite well. I only wish usb were a boot option in the bios. Any

suggestions to make this cd work...?
