maynardvdm Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Hi It sounds like the drive itself is faulty, if it is still under warranty you should let them (the place where you bought it from) test the drive for you. RandyL Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Hi andy. No need to be sorry. It happens all the time. We can always move your thread to the right section. I tend to agree with maynardvdm. It does sound faulty. Even relatively new ones can fail. You could try it in a a different machine but from what you describe it's probably a waste of time. Device manager in my opinion rarely sees a problem with a failed or failing drive. Your drivers are probably fine and that's why it says it's working properly. Plastic Nev Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Hi, further to and explanation of, why we think the drive itself may need replacement, CD/DVD drives have different heads, one for the CD's and the other for DVD's. it is quite often the case that the read/write head for the CD side is OK but the DVD head has gone, or it can be the other way round of course, hence why in your case some disks can be read but not others.
