remote desktop time out when accessing TS

I have been using remote desktop for months to access our terminal server

from my laptop. I am hardwired to my modem using earthlink cable. It always

worked fine. SUddenly it has started timing out on me. My web access works

fine, and I can use remote desktop on my laptop from a friend's houses using

their internet connection and I get to the server OK, but on mine now it

just times out on me. Earthlink help was of no help to me at all. I can ping

the server fine, get to the web OK, just can't get the remote desktop

connection. Other users are getting to the server fine. ANy idea what would

cause this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check the EventLog on the server.

Which OS is the server running? I'm assuming Windows 2003.

Maybe you have been using the server for 3 months exactly? If so,

have you verified that you have the required licensing in place, i.e

an activated licensing server with purchased TS CALs?

Re: remote desktop time out when accessing TS

OS is Windows Server 2003. I looked thru the event logs and don't see any

messages that look like they would relate to the timeout problem (I am

accessing the server from another location right now - cant get to it from

home!). WHich event log would the likely messages show up in, and what type

of message would I look for? I looked at all of them, almost exclusively

informational messages or printer-related ones. I've been using the server

for several months, defienitely more than 3 months. Nonbody else has a

problem getting to the server, and I can get to it form anywhere else but my

home. I've used it successfully via wireless connections from two different

locations, it only times out on startup when I try to get at it from home via

my Earthilink cable connection. I never get to the logon prompt where I enter

my userID and password. I start up remote desktop on my PC and use the IP

that I've always used, and it just times out when I hit the Connect button. I

know I'm using the right IP (I'm using it right now) and I can ping the IP

succesfully from home, just can't get to the server.

Re: remote desktop time out when accessing TS

Then it looks like it is some sort of problem with your connection,

not with the Terminal Server. Have you checked you firewall?

To definitively rule out TS licensing problems, check in the TS

Licensing Manager if there is a free purchased TS CAL available for

your workstation.

If that can be ruled out, I'd post to a networking newsgroup.

Re: remote desktop time out when accessing TS

Turns out it's firewall-related. I posted at the networking site and got some

help there. With my previous testing to see if the firewall was the problem I

was turning the firewall off/on thru Windows LiveOneCare. Turns out when I

turned it off thru the msconfig services tab it allowed me to use remote

desktop. Thanks for your input.

Re: remote desktop time out when accessing TS

I wouldn't really say it's solved, but at least I have a workaround. I still

have no idea why the firewall is suddenly preventing me from using remote

desktop, and why I can use remote desktop with the firewall on from anywhere

but my home without any problem. And it's a bit of a pain to have to turn the

firewall off whenever I want to use remote desktop at home, since there I

usually work from. But at least I can use it from home now. Now I need to

find out what to do to get it working from home with the firewall turned on.

Re: remote desktop time out when accessing TS

OK, I understand.

I'm no expert on this, but obviously, you'll have to open the right

ports on the firewall.

When you establish a connection from your PC at home, which is

inside your firewall, to your server at work, you'll need to have

the firewall be able to establish connections outbound to the RDP

port (3389) on the server, coming from a dynamic port on your

firewall (1024 to 65525).

Your firewall should be smart enough to know that once the dynamic

port is open data should be able to flow both ways (however,

this isn't always the case). Once the dynamic port is open on the

firewall and the RDP port is open on your remote server, then you

should be able to stream data however you want.
