Hi,

Can anyone please help. Both the DVD & CD-RW drives in my computer do not see a disc when it is inserted into either of the drives. When the appropriate disc is inserted into either drive the green light flashes briefly but nothing else happens. If I try to play a music CD using Windows Media Player I get a message telling me that there is not a disc inserted.'My Computer' shows both drives listed so I believe they are being recognised. If I go into Device Manager both drives are listed with the following information:- ATAPI DVD A DH 20A4P and OPTORITE CD-RW CW5201. Both devices are said to be working properly. I have tried a software update using the update wizard, the result of which is that there is not a better match. I have also tried following the trouble shooting help which is there, again without any joy.

I have recently had a new motherboard fitted ( ASRock K7S41/ K7S41GX) which has cured a persistantly crashing computer but I believe the drive problem has started since the new motherboard was fitted. I have contacted the shop and told them of the problem but they say they would need the computer taking in which is both inconvenient and will no doubt be costly. Hence my reqest for help.

My computer has an AMD Athlon 2600 1.68GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM.

I am running Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

I would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

Vittorio

Hi, at this stage and considering you have had it in for repair and replacement of the M.B. I would say take it back and ask for it to be fixed, any repair shop should check everything functions before letting it back out, they obviously didn't.

If they had, they would have spotted the drives weren't working, and informed you if it wasn't connected to the original repair.

Stand up for your rights and if necessary, quote the sale of goods act, it does cover repairs as well.

Let us know how you get on, but do try to avoid spending any more cash with them unless they can prove the drives weren't working before you took it in.

DVD & CD-RW will not read discs

Hi Nev,

Thank you for your reply to my plea for help. I must admit it was not the reply I was expecting but I have taken the computor back to the repairers and explained the situation. I am awaiting a telephone call to tell me what they have found. My problem with taking it back was the long interval between getting it back from repair the first time and realising the drives were not working properly. I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks again,

Thanks for the update, I know perhaps it wasn't the answer you expected, but in cases where a machine is either brand new, or as in this case straight from repair, any other suggestions for a fix to the problem could invalidate any warranty on the machine, and we don't want you finding that out if it should go wrong again.

So we always recommend taking it back in order that the warranty is maintained. That way it doesn't cost you any more than a little time.

Far better than perhaps having to buy expensive new drives or other hardware/software, which could be the outcome on an older machine out of its warranty period.

DVD & CD-RW will not read discs

Hi Nev,

Sorry for the delay in giving you the latest on my computer problem. I have finally got it back. The repairers had it for over a week. The outcome is that the cd-rom was faulty and that was also affecting the dvd. The cd-rom has been dis-connected and the dvd is now working ok. The dvd will do everthing I need so I will settle for that. They would not say that the fitting of a new motherboard was the cause of the problem. However, the good news is that there was no charge. So, thank you again for your help. :)
